MANKATO, Minn. --Behind power-play goals from Tyler Shelast and
Mike Batovanja and a 38-save performance from goaltender
Michael-Lee Teslak the Michigan Tech (7-18-3, 6-11-3 WCHA) hockey
team earned a 3-2 win and series-split with Minnesota State
(12-14-4, 8-11-3 WCHA) Saturday night at the Midwest Wireless Civic
Center Saturday night.
MSU took a 1-0 lead at the 18:54 mark of the first period off an
unassisted goal from Jon Dubel.
The Huskies took their first lead of the weekend in the second
period, as Shelast and Batovanja each lit the lamp with a man
advantage. Shelast tipped a Brandon Schwartz shot from the point up
high past Mavericks' netminder Dan Tormey at 9:49. The tally was
Shelast's seventh of the year and his sixth on the power play.
Schwartz recorded his team-leading 11th assist of the season, while
Nick Anderson also chipped in the fifth helper of his senior
campaign on the play.
Batovanja netted his third marker of the year, at the 16:55 mark of
the middle frame. The junior forward fired a shot from the high
point that squirted through Tormey's legs. Geoff Kinrade notched
his sixth assist of the year on the goal and Taggart Desmet was
credited with his ninth helper on the season.
Desmet then tallied what proved to be the game-winning lamplighter
at 1:57 of the third period when he got Tormey down on the ice and
flipped the puck into an open net. The tally was Desmet's sixth of
the 2005-06 campaign. Jimmy Kerr was credited with his fourth
helper of the season.
MSU's Kurtis Kisio made the score 3-2 at the 9:21 mark of the final
stanza, but that would be all the scoring the home team could
muster.
Teslak closed the door one final time with less than :30 left in
regulation when he stoned Jeff Marler on a breakaway.
The Huskies scored three times on 13 shots, compared to the
Mavericks, who put up two goals on 40 shots.
Tech went 2-5 on the power play and held MSU scoreless on six
chances with a man advantage.
Michigan Tech is back at home next weekend for its annual Winter
Carnival celebration. The Huskies host the Minnesota Golden Gophers
next Friday (Feb. 10) and Saturday (Feb. 11) at the John MacInnes
Student Ice Arena. Friday's contest begins at 7:07 p.m., while the
puck will drop at 5:07 p.m. Saturday night.
