MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech women's basketball team clinched a home court game in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 67-57 victory over arch-rival Northern Michigan today at the Berry Events Center. The win gave Tech a season series sweep over the Wildcats.
The Huskies built up a 22-14 lead in the first half before the Wildcats answered with an 11-0 for a three-point margin at the 5:24 mark. Alicia Schneider's three-pointer with two seconds left in the first half gave MTU a 32-31 edge at the break.
Amanda Sieja took over in the second half. Her three-point play with 13:38 left gave the visitors a 12-point bulge and capped a 16-7 start to the second period. Jenna Bartels' triple three minutes later gave Tech its largest lead of the game at 18 points. Sieja scored four more points down the stretch to hold off NMU, which was playing its final game of the season.
Sieja finished with a game-high 20 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds. Sarah Magee added 15 points -- including scoring the team's first nine points of the game. Catherine Rottier notched eight points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Tech held a 35-26 rebounding advantage. It also used a 52-percent second-half shooting clip to move to 19-7 overall and 14-4 in the GLIAC.
Michigan Tech will host Lake Superior State Tuesday (Feb. 28) in a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal at the SDC Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets for that game will go on sale at the SDC Ticket Office beginning Sunday at 1 p.m. Season ticket holders will have until noon on Tuesdsay to retain their seats.
