ALLENDALE, Mich. -- A 16-1 run late in the first half propelled
#13 Grand Valley State to a 60-39 victory over Michigan Tech in a
showdown of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North
Division leaders at the GVSU FIeldhouse. The Lakers forced 14 Tech
turnovers while committing only five of their own in winning their
10th straight game.
The Huskies held a 17-15 lead 10 minutes into the contest before
GVSU made its run. The margin was as many as 15 points before Jenna
Bartels hit a three-pointer and Maria Schneider converted a
three-point play to get Tech back within 35-24 at halftime.
The Lakers (21-3, 14-1 GLIAC) expanded their advantage to as many
as 17 points by the 16:04 mark of the second half before MTU made a
9-0 run to make it a 45-37 score with 11:34 to play. GVSU answered
with the next six points for a 15-point margin under three minutes
to play.
Amanda Sieja led the Huskies in scoring and rebounding with 10
points and nine boards. Catherine Rottier, who was limited to 27
minutes due to foul trouble, scored nine points. Bartels finished
with five points and six rebounds.
Tech shot 34 percent from the field in the game including 25
percent for the second half. Grand Valley State finished at 37
percent and held a 38-32 rebounding margin.
Michigan Tech (17-6, 13-3 GLIAC) will remain on the road and face
the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday (Feb. 18) at 1 p.m.
