Huskies Clinch Home GLIAC Tournament Hoops Game
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech controlled nearly every facet
of its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's
basketball game against #25 Lake Superior State to come away with a
72-41 victory. It was a great afternoon for the Huskies, who
celebrated Senior/Parents day in front of a season-high 1,578 fans
on Winter Carnival. The win was also important as it clinched Tech
a home game in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament.
LSSU managed to shoot just 25 percent for the game and Michigan
Tech held the Lakers 36 points below their season average of 77.
Meanwhile, the hosts shot 51 percent from the floor including a 43
percent clip from long range.
Tech built up an 18-9 lead in the first 12 minutes. The Lakers then
put on the full-court trapping press that gave the Huskies problems
when the teams played back on Jan. 7. LSSU scored four straight
points before MTU bounced back with six consecutive points. Sarah
Magee's three-point play at 3:45 to give Tech their largest
advantage of the half at 27-15 advantage. The Huskies would settle
for a 32-24 edge at the break.
LSSU didn't score for the first 3:40 of the second half and seniors
Magee and Maria Schneider combined for eight points, allowing the
Huskies to expand their lead to 18. Three minutes later, five
different Tech players scored points in an 11-0 spurt that left the
score, 58-31. The margin never dipped below 24 points for the final
8:38.
Junior Catherine Rottier tallied a double-double with 15 points and
11 rebounds to go with three assists and four steals. Magee scored
11 points and Brooke Sirard also reached double digits with 10
points. Schneider notched seven points and nine rebounds.
Michigan Tech (17-5, 13-2 GLIAC) will be on the road next week
beginning at Grand Valley State on Thursday (Feb. 16) for a 6 p.m.
