Richardson Ties School Record with 12-of-12 Mark at Foul
Line
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Ninth-ranked Findlay withstood a late rally
by Michigan Tech to gain a 71-63 victory in Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the SDC Gym today.
The Huskies trimmed a once-15-point second half deficit to 62-59
with 1:13 to play but the visitors held on.
Radayl Richardson tied a school record for free throw percentage in
a game by knocking down all 12 of his attempts in a 22-point second
half effort. The senior guard tallied 15 consecutive Tech points in
a three minute span to cut a 44-29 Findlay lead to a 52-44 margin
with 10:37 to go.
It was a 10-point game at the four minute mark before Sean Geary
spurred a Huskies run. The sophomore point guard had an assist, a
basket, and an assist on a Richardson three-pointer that made the
score, 62-59, at the 1:13 mark. The Oilers answered immediately as
Josh Bostic received a long pass to break Tech's full-court press
and ended up with a three-point play. Richardson made two free
throws to make the score, 65-61, with 47 seconds left, but UF again
broke the press and got an easy layup. Bostic drained two free
throws at the :16 mark to put the game away.
"It's a disappointing loss because we didn't execute what we
practiced all week," said head coach Kevin Luke. "You can't beat a
quality team like Findlay by playing outside of our system."
Tech was outscored in the paint, 38-18. The Huskies' task of
defeating a top-10 ranked opponent was made more difficult after
the loss of leading scorer Tim Strom to an ankle injury in the
first half. The 6-7 forward scored just three points before being
sidelined for the rest of the contest.
Findlay led by a 27-22 margin with 2:05 to go in the opening half
before a 7-0 run threatened to send the Huskies into halftime
trailing by 12. However, Robby Springborn beat the buzzer with a
three-pointer to make it a 34-25 halftime score.
The Oilers had a 9-0 run early in the second half to make it a
15-point game before MTU battled back.
Richardson finished with a game-high 24 points despite making just
five-of-20 field goal attempts. Josh Makela was the only other
Husky in double figures with 13 points. He and sophomore Fedrick
Bowe, who saw his first action of the season, tied with a team-high
six rebounds apiece.
Tech held a 43-29 rebounding advantage and had 19 more field goal
attempts in the contest. Findlay won the game by making 51 percent
of its shots compared to 31 percent for the hosts.
Michigan Tech (5-4, 3-2 GLIAC) will host St. Joseph's in a
non-conference matchup on Tuesday (Dec. 19) at 7 p.m.
Notes: Richardson's 12-of-12 free throw effort tied Matt Cameron
(Dec. 11, 2002) and Chris Gutkowski (Jan. 25, 1980) who both hit
12-of-12 from the line ... Because of the injury, Strom was held
under 10 points for the first time all season ... Richardson tied a
season high with 24 points and registered his third 20+ point of
the campaign ... Bowe did not play in the first eight games of the
season because of a hand injury.
