HOUGHTON, Mich. -- St. Cloud State (7-3-3, 4-3-3 WCHA) received
two-point efforts from four players and Bobby Goepfert stopped 24
of 25 shots to push the Huskies' unbeaten streak to eight games
after defeating the Michigan Tech (6-5-2, 3-4-2 WCHA) hockey team
by a score of 4-1 in front of 2,394 at the John MacInnes Student
Ice Arena Friday night. The loss was the first of the year at home
for Tech.
SCSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 4:36 mark of the first period
when Andreas Nodl tallied his eighth goal and 19th point of the
season off helpers from Matt Stephenson and Nate Dey.
Senior alternate captain Tyler Skworchinski (Marathon, Ontario)
knotted the score at, 1-1, with his fourth marker of the year at
13:26. Jordan Foote (Edmonton, Alberta) started the play at the
point by slipping a pass to linemate Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alberta) in
the slot. Kerr then started a great backdoor play by sneaking a
pass through the legs of a St. Cloud State defenseman in front of
the net. Waiting for the pass was Skworchinski, who tapped in the
easy lamplighter as netminder Bobby Goepfert was beaten on the
glove side.
Ryan Lasch provided the game-winning goal for the visitors just
over four minutes later by netting one of his two tallies on the
night. Justin Fletcher notched his first of two points in the game
with the lone assist on the goal.
Michigan Tech held a slight 8-7 shot advantage after one
stanza.
Neither team lit the lamp in the middle frame, and the Huskies of
MTU again recorded a 8-7 lead in the shot category.
SCSU made it a two-goal game at the 4:15 mark of the final session
when Fletcher chipped in his second goal of 2006-07 as a result of
Nodl's 12th assist of his rookie campaign.
Lasch tacked on a power-play tally for the victors at 7:23 as Lasch
moved his season goal total to nine. Dan Kronick and Stephenson
each earned their fifth assist of the year.
Tech filed a 10-7 lead in shots during the period and capped the
contest with a 26-21 shot advantage over St. Cloud State.
Goepfert improved to 5-3-3 with the win, while Michael-Lee Teslak
(Fernie, B.C.) saw his record fall to 3-3-1 after making 17 saves
for the Huskies of MTU.
SCSU converted on one of its six chances on the power play,
compared to Michigan Tech, which was held scoreless in eight
opportunities with a man advantage.
The two teams meet again Saturday night for the series finale at
the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Opening faceoff is scheduled
for 7:07 p.m.
Notes: After picking up an assist tonight, Jimmy Kerr moved into a
tie with Alex Gagne (2-7--9) for first on Tech's scoring chart with
4-5--9 ... Tyler Skworchinski is now in a four-way tie for first on
the squad in goals (4) and shares the second spot in points
(4-4--8) with Tyler Shelast (4-4--8).
