DULUTH, Minn. -- Paced by 16 kills from All-American Vicky
Braegelmann, the fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs handed
Michigan Tech a 3-0 (31-29, 30-26, 30-19) setback in non-conference
volleyball action Tuesday night at Romano Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (23-2, 8-0 NCC) earned the season sweep of the Huskies
(13-11, 9-5 GLIAC) with the win and snapped Tech's five-match
winning streak in the process.
"Despite the final score, I thought we played much better against
Minnesota Duluth tonight than in our match at home earlier in the
season," said head coach Krista Mikesch. "Game one could have gone
either way and we had chances to pull it out. We started off with
some unforced errors in the second game, but we eliminated those
errors in the second-half of the game. In game three we struggled a
bit, but UMD had something to do with that."
"We have come a long way and that should give our players a great
deal of confidence heading into this weekend's conference matches.
We have the opportunity to extend our GLIAC winning streak to six
matches and that should provide more than enough motivation for
us."
Sophomore Jen Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) led MTU's offensive
attack with eight kills, three block assists and one block solo.
Junior Kali Jeter (Middleton, Wis.) finished with eight kills and
eight digs. Redshirt freshman Kelly Jorgensen (Eden Prairie, Minn.)
chipped in six kills, two block assists and one block solo.
Sophomore Christa Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) added five
kills and three block assists, while sophomore Veronica Armstrong
(Battle Creek, Mich./Central) recorded five kills, 14 digs, one
service ace and one block assist.
Freshman Alison Greene (Andover, Minn./Totino Grace) dished out 17
assists, compared to senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer
Lutheran), who had 15 helpers.
Sophomore Kelsey Skoog (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) provided a
match-best 22 digs and one service ace.
Besides Braegelmann's 16 kills, Kari Wolford contributed 13 kills,
eight digs and two block assists for UMD. Katie Gangelhoff led all
players with 43 assists in the victory.
Minnesota Duluth compiled a .323 hitting percentage, while Michigan
Tech amassed a .202 attack percentage.
The Bulldogs held a 10-7 edge in block over the Huskies.
Tech resumes conference play this weekend with key matches at Grand
Valley State and Ferris State. The Huskies challenge the Lakers on
Friday (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. before taking on the Bulldogs on
Saturday (Oct. 21) at 4 p.m.
