Huskies Hold Lakers Scoreless for Final 3:58
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech women's basketball team
held 10th-ranked Grand Valley State scoreless for the final 3:58 to
claim a 64-58 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
victory in front of 1,189 fans at the SDC Gym tonight. The Huskies
scored the final nine points of the game to improve their overall
record to 10-2 and remain undefeated at 6-0 in league play.
Tech trailed 50-44 with 9:12 to play before hitting three
three-pointers over the next three minutes. Maria Schneider's
triple put the Huskies up, 53-52, with 6:08 left. GVSU scored six
of the next eight points for a 58-55 lead at the 3:58 mark. The
visitors would not score again -- missing their final eight
shots.
Catherine Rottier put the Huskies on top with a pair of foul shots
with 1:22 to play. Ashley Zehren then came up with a steal and
threw it ahead to Schneider for a layup and a three-point lead with
1:04 remaining. Rottier and Schneider combined for three more makes
at the foul line in the final 23 seconds for the final margin of
64-58.
GVSU made just six field goals in the second half in 25 attempts
(24 percent) and finished at 30.8 percent shooting for the game.
The Huskies sank 47.4 percent of their attempts from the field
including a blistering 70 percent (seven-of-10) from behind the
three-point arc.
The lead changed hands 11 times in the first half. Alicia Schneider
hit a three-pointer and two free throws in the final 1:11 of the
frame to deadlock the score, 31-31, at halftime.
Rottier finished with a game-high 19 points with the aid of
10-of-13 free throw shooting. Alicia Schneider added 11 points as
she was a perfect three-of-three from long range. Amanda Sieja
turned in a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Maria
Schneider also reached double figures with a season-high 10
points.
Michigan Tech will take its perfect league record to Lake Superior
State on Saturday (Jan. 7) for a GLIAC tilt. The Huskies and Lakers
are scheduled to tip off at 1 p.m.
