Huskies Defense Limits T'Wolves to 26 Percent FG
Shooting
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech women's basketball team had
seven players with seven points or more in a 71-47 Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Northwood today in
front of 1,090 fans at the SDC Gym. The Huskies defense limited the
Timberwolves to 26 percent field goal shooting in the game.
MTU didn't allow the Timberwolves to get on the board for the first
three minutes of the contest. An 8-0 run midway through the stanza
was capped by back-to-back baskets from Brooke Sirard and made the
score, 19-6. Catherine Rottier's third three-pointer gave the
Huskies their largest lead of the half, 34-16, at 2:08. Tech
entered the lockerroom for halftime as 36-18 leaders.
Rottier's three-point play at 12:12 of the second half put the
hosts on top by 25 (50-25). The margin never dipped below 20
again.
Sirard blocked three shots in the second half to finish the game
with a career-high four. She also had eight points and five
rebounds off the bench. Rottier earned game-high honors with 17
points. Maria Schneider and Sarah Magee each had eight points and
six rebounds.
The Huskies shot 45.6 percent from the field and held a 46-32
rebounding advantage.
Michigan Tech (13-5, 9-2 GLIAC) will travel for two road games in
Erie, Pa., next week. The Huskies face Gannon Thursday (Feb. 2) at
6 p.m. and Mercyhurst Saturday (Feb. 4) at 1 p.m.
Notes: Freshman Alicia Schneider received the starting nod for the
first time in her collegiate career . . . The Huskies, who defeated
the T'wolves, 63-59, in Midland on Dec. 8, swept the season series
over Northwood . . . MTU's shooting percentage of 45.6 was its
third-best of the 2005-06 campaign.
