Magee Notches Career-High 21 Points; Tech Makes 21 Free
Throws
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech women's basketball team
made 23 free throws -- all after halftime -- to outlast Hillsdale,
62-56, in double overtime today in front of 1,681 fans at the SDC
Gym. Sarah Magee's career-high 21 points included two swishes at
the free throw line with six seconds left in the first overtime to
send the game into the second extra session.
Tech did not make a field goal in either overtime, but converted on
14-of-16 foul shots in the extra 10 minutes to move to 12-4 overall
and 8-1 in the GLIAC.
Hillsdale began the second half with a 24-22 edge before the lead
changed hands seven times over the next 20 minutes. Magee's free
throws with 1:01 left in regulation gave the Huskies a 48-46
margin. The Chargers' Julie Slot made a jumper with 34 seconds to
tie the game. Maria Schneider had two off-balance chances to win
the game in the final five seconds, but neither shot fell.
MTU never had a lead in the first overtime. Catherine Rottier made
two free throws at 3:27 and Schneider cashed in on two more at the
2:30 mark to knot the game at 52. Neither team scored again until
Slot made two charity tries with :28 left. Seconds later, Magee was
fouled trying to dribble into the paint. She calmly hit both free
throw attempts to force another OT -- Tech's first double overtime
game since March 6, 1998.
Magee opened scoring in the second OT with free throws at the 4:09
mark. Slot answered with a jumper to tie the game at 56 with 3:20
to play. Hillsdale didn't score again. Ashley Zehren's free throw
at 3:05 proved to be the game winner. The Huskies made five-of-six
foul shots down the stretch for the final margin of 62-56.
Magee's 21 points came from seven-of-eight field goal shooting and
six-of-seven foul shooting. She also had a team-high eight
rebounds. Rottier added 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Amanda Sieja tallied nine points and four boards.
Tech shot 40 percent from the floor compared to 36 percent for
Hillsdale. The Huskies converted 15 more free throws than the
visitors attempted (MT 23-of-29; HC 6-of-8).
Michigan Tech will remain at home for two games next week. The
Huskies' next opponent is Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (Jan.
26) at 1 p.m.
Notes: Tech's last double overtime game on March 6, 1998, was a
94-92 Huskies win at Southern Indiana in the NCAA Tournament . . .
Magee's previous career high was 20 points.
