Sieja Tallies 1,000th Career Point and 500th Career

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech grabbed 51 rebounds and made 25
free throws to defeat Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference South Division foe Wayne State, 69-54, in women's
basketball tonight. Senior Amanda Sieja scored her 1,000th career
point and freshman Katie Webber scored a career-high 11 points in
the Huskies 11th win of the season.
Tech led a majority of a tight first half. Sieja got her 1,000th
point with a layup three minutes into the game. Webber's third
three-pointer of the night at the 2:09 mark made the score 33-27.
Fellow freshman Alicia Schneider added a pair of free throws 30
seconds later and the Huskies went into halftime as 35-29
leaders.
Sarah Magee's three-pointer at the 18:08 mark of the second half
put the hosts up by 11. The Warriors remained within eight points,
51-43, with 8:47 to play before Sieja made two free throws. Two
possessions later, Jenna Bartels, who was seeing her first action
since Dec. 21, drained a triple for a 13-point margin. Bartels went
on to score 11 points in just six minutes of play. The Huskies made
eight free throws in the final six minutes to gain the victory.
Tech snared 14 more rebounds (51 to 37) than Wayne State and held
the visitors to 30 percent shooting. In addition, the Huskies were
25-of-32 (78 percent) from the free throw line.
Webber had all 11 of her points in the first half. Sieja finished
with a team-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds. In addition
to the 1,000-point milestone, she also surpassed the 500 rebound
mark. Catherine Rottier added eight points, a game-high 11 rebounds
and five assists.
Michigan Tech (11-4, 7-1 GLIAC) will remain at home to face
Hillsdale on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 1 p.m.
Notes: Sieja is the 15th player in MTU women's basketball history
to score 1,000 points. The 6-2 center now owns 1,012 points and 502
rebounds in 92 career games.
