Solid All-Around Game Moves Huskies to 1-1 in GLIAC
MIDLAND, Mich. -- Michigan Tech eclipsed the 70-point mark for
the first time this season and it resulted in a victory, 74-65,
over Northwood in a GLIAC men's basketball game at the Bennett
Center. The Huskies scored three players in double figures and shot
47 percent from the floor in the win.
MTU opened the game on a 9-0 run and held the lead until the 2:57
mark of the first half when NU tied it with a three-pointer. Bob
Evans answered and the Huskies ended up with a 36-34 halftime
lead.
The hosts held their largest lead at 47-43 with five minutes gone
in the second half. Tech tied things up on Josh Makela's free
throws at the 11:35 mark before a layup by Radayl Richardson and a
jumper by Craig Genung on back-to-back possessions. Those two
buckets put MTU on top for good with 10:22 to play, but it was far
from over.
NU's Nemanja Kreckovic drained a three-pointer with 4:46 to play
that made it a five point margin. Richardson answered with a triple
at the end of the shot clock on the Huskies ensuing chance to push
the lead back up to eight, 66-58. Stingy Tech defense kept the
Timberwolves from scoring a field goal from the 3:19 mark through
the final buzzer. Four makes in five trips to the free throw line
kept Tech on top for the win.
Richardson finished with a game-high 18 points. Tim Strom tallied
13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Genung notched 12 points
including 10 in the second half. Sean Geary got his first
collegiate start and was named Superior Player of the Game. He
finished with five points, two rebounds, two assists, a steal and a
block.
Michigan Tech held a 33-31 rebounding edge including a 14-11 margin
in offensive boards. Northwood committed 13 turnovers compared to
10 for MTU.
The Huskies (2-4, 1-1 GLIAC) will remain on the road for a GLIAC
matchup Saturday (Dec. 10) at Saginaw Valley State. Tipoff is
slated for 3 p.m.
