Sieja's bucket with :29 remaining provides winning
margin
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Amanda Sieja scored two of her game high 19
points with 29 seconds remaining to give Michigan Tech's women's
basketball team a 56-55 victory over Lewis in game one of the Days
Inn Classic hosted by Grand Valley State. With the win, the Huskies
avenged a loss at Lewis just six days earlier.
Sieja's basket changed the lead for the fourth consecutive trip
down the floor before Tech's defense held. Lewis had three
potential game-winning shots in the final 17 seconds, but none
fell.
"We needed this win," said third-year head coach John Barnes. "It
was nice to see Amanda step up tonight and our defense was strong
all night."
Michigan Tech held the lead all but two minutes of the first half
en route to a 27-26 margin at the intermission. The Flyers didn't
gain their first lead of the second stanza until 1:57 to go. Each
team scored on each of their possessions the rest of the way until
LU failed to score in the final :29.
Sieja knocked home six field goals and all seven of her free throws
for a season-high 19 points. Catherine Rottier also had a huge
night with eight points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Sarah Magee
notched six points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Tech shot 39 percent from the field and held the Flyers to 32
percent. The Huskies also used a 43-34 rebounding advantage and a
10-of-11 performance at the free throw line.
Michigan Tech (2-1) will play tomorrow vs. Marygrove at 5 p.m. in
its second game of the Days Inn Classic.
