W. Rexford Benoit

W. Rexford "Rex" Benoit joined the Michgian Tech coaching staff
in 1941 as head coach for track and basketball and as an assistant
in football. He continued as track coach for the next 31 years and
held many other positions throughout his tenure at the University.
Benoit was acting athletic director and head football coach in
1946-47, assistant director from 1947 until he retired in 1972, and
handled athletic training duties from 1954-1966. He also coached
several cross country teams during his coaching career at Michigan
Tech.
Benoit had an outstanding career as a high school coach before
coming to Houghton. In 16 years of teaching and coaching in
Illinois, Benoit's teams won 54 trophies and established a state
record with 39 consecutive football wins. While at Michigan Tech,
he managed the state high school district and regional basketball
tournaments and Upper Peninsula track finals.
