Albert "Abbie" Maki '48 showed his potential with the Huskies'
hockey team during his first season, when he was named Michigan
Tech's Freshman Athlete of the Year. Also that year, he played
football and was a member of the boxing team.
Maki's coaches and teammates recognized his leadership and for
the next three years he captained the hockey team. He was an
honorable mention selection to the All-Midwest hockey team his
final season.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in mechanical
engineering, Maki remained active, scouting hockey players in the
eastern U.S. for a number of years. He was also active in the MTU
Alumni Association, helping to reorganize the alumni chapter in Los
Angeles, California, in 1951.
Maki served 12 years as a trustee of the Michigan Tech Fund and
two terms as president. He is a charter member of the presidents
Club and was the second recipient of the Board of Control Silver
Metal.
In his professional life, Maki has held vice president positions
in AVCO Corporation and at Castel Woodworking, a division of
Centrex Corporatioin. He currently is "retired," but on special
assignment for the Brunswick Corporation, with responsibility for a
$10 million plant construction and materials handling project.
