HOUGHTON, Mich. – The No. 16 nationally-ranked Michigan Tech men's basketball team used a 3-point barrage, including a single-game 3-point record as Ty Fernholz hit 12 3-pointers for a new career-high 36 points to best Roosevelt, 99-72 and earn the Huskies their second-straight GLIAC regular season title on Senior Day, at the SDC Gymnasium.
In total, Michigan Tech hit 21 3-pointers in 45 attempts (46.7 percent), nearing the team program record of 23 made 3-pointers set earlier this season at the Florida Tech Christmas Classic, where Marcus Tomashek reset the single-game 3-point record with 11 treys made.
Matt Schmainda also had a career day, splashing five 3-pointers on ten tries for a new career-high of 16 points. Michigan Tech seniors Dawson Nordgaard (13) and Tomashek (11) also reached double-figure scoring, although the bench shone with 64 total points from the Black & Gold's reserves.
The Huskies finished with a league-best 16-4 record for an overall standing of 25-5. Roosevelt drops to 4-23 and 3-17 in the league.
"Its hard to win Championships in the GLIAC and for this group to do it two years in a row is very impressive. It's awesome for the seniors, especially with the growing process we had with this group to start their career," said Tech head coach Josh Buettner. "Nothing has come easy this year and today everything kind of went right and the shots went in. The younger guards kind of stole the senior spotlight, but it was awesome to see the ball moving and shots going in. I'm just really happy for this group."
Roosevelt hit the first shot of the day, a 3-pointer by Kaleim Taylor, but the Huskies then went on an 18-0 run to the 14:48 mark as Tomashek hit two 3-pointers, Nordgaard added three field goals in the paint and Fernholz began his career day with two 3-pointers of his own.
The Fernholz takeover began with 5:22 remaining in the first half, as the Stoughton, Wisconsin, native hit six 3-pointers in the next 3:09, putting the Black & Gold ahead 55-23 with 3:13 to play in the period. Josh Terrian added a 3-pointer on the next possession while Nordgaard and Grant Warren had buckets down the stretch to see Michigan Tech leading 62-29 entering halftime.
The Huskies shot 57.5 percent (23-40) from the field while knocking down 15 of their 23 attempts from beyond the arc (65.2%), while having 13 assists, led by five from Nate Abel and three by Terrian.
Fernholz (9) and Schmainda (7) led the way in scoring for the second half as 11 players for the Black & Gold made the score sheet.
Michigan Tech led by as many as 48 points in the second half, off of the 10th 3-pointer made by Fernholz on the day, with 11:06 to go in the game (88-40). He hit his 12th of the game with 7:56 remaining to set a new program record, as the Huskies ultimately cruised to a 99-72 victory to earn the series sweep over Roosevelt.
The duo of Abel (6) and Terrian (4) led the team in assists. Abel and Nordgaard each pulled down a team-best seven boards. Peyton Lacombe grabbed six rebounds to go with two points in his first game since Dec. 4, 2025.
Taylor led three Lakers in double-figure scoring with 17 points. Mikey West added 17 and Davon Smith-Johnson added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
