The Series

In a series that dates back to 1980, when both teams were members of the GLIAC, Hillsdale holds a 19-14 advantage. The Black & Gold have won their last six meetings with Hillsdale dating back to the 2018 season and have won by a combined 40 points in two wins under head coach Dan Mettlach. However, the Huskies hold a 4-13 record at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium.

About the Chargers

Hillsdale got its season started last weekend on the road, using late-game heroics to overcome McKendree 22-17 to claim the first season-opening win since 2022. A 50-yard touchdown pass from Colin McKernan found Tutt Carrico with 1:09. The extra point following the score was blocked, but recovered and ran into the end zone for a two-point conversion by Mason Moulton to make it a five-point game.

A game-ending interception by the Chargers defense in the end zone with under 10 seconds to play decided the game for the road team and kindled Hillsdale to a 1-0 start to the season. Despite the exciting finish, both teams spent the first 27 minutes of the contest in a scoreless tie.

McKernan threw for 255 yards (17-for-32) with three passing touchdowns, an interception and three sacks in the victory, connecting with Carrico for two touchdowns and Connor Pratt once. Andrew Konieczny was the top receiver on the day with 106 yards in seven receptions. McKernan also moved the chains with his feet, netting 50 rushing yards on 20 attempts.

Defensively, Hillsdale saw interceptions by Ryan Niksa and Colin Morrow, who also led the way in total tackles with seven and four, respectively.

About the Huskies

Halfway through the non-conference schedule, the 2-0 Huskies have handled the opposition with relative ease, averaging 41 points while holding the opposition to just 13 points.

It started with a ranked win in the season and home opener, shutting out the then-No. 16 Bemidji State Beavers in the second half, then holding South Dakota Mines without a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter of last week's 45-9 victory on the road.

The fantastic start has the Huskies receiving votes in the AFCA Top-25 polls the past two weeks. Offensively, quarterback Alex Bueno has tossed for 358 yards and four touchdowns, adding 135 yards on the ground in 22 carries. Veteran Drew Collins had a breakthrough game against the Hardrockers with two rushing scores and a nine-yard receiving touchdown.

On the flip side, the Black & Gold's defense has been stifling with four forced fumbles, four sacks, two blocked kicks and two interceptions through two games. The defense diminished South Dakota Mines' running game, allowing just four yards in 14 carries.

Chase Koch and Porter Zeeman led the way with 11 total tackles, respectively.

One Last Thing

The last time the Huskies faced Hillsdale at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium, wide receiver Ethan Champney reeled in a career-high three touchdowns on seven receptions covering 98 yards in the 28-24 victory.
