Tech ties Tommies Friday at the Mac

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with St. Thomas on Friday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Tommies tied the game with 1.2 seconds left in regulation and then earned the extra CCHA point in the shootout.

Tech remains unbeaten at home with an 8-5-2 overall record and a 5-2-2 mark in the CCHA.

"We got in penalty trouble the first two periods but played our best hockey in the third," Tech coach Bill Muckalt said. "Our special teams were big tonight. It was a tough way for regulation to end. We just needed to make one more play and once less mistake."

Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period. Reid Andresen opened the scoring 7:38 into the game with a long shot through traffic on the power play. Teydon Trembecky and Stiven Sardarian assisted on Andresen's third of the season and second on the power play.

Stiven Sardarian added to the lead at 7:06 of the second period when he went 1-on-4 against the Tommies and fired in his fifth of the season. Max Koskipirtti and Isaac Gordon assisted on the play.

UST (5-6-3, 2-2-2 CCHA) then scored twice to tie it before the second intermission. Lucas Van Vliet scored with 3:31 left in the second to get the Tommies on the board.

Former Husky Nick Williams then tied the game with a long shot through traffic with 54 seconds left in the second.

Teydon Trembecky was slewfooted early in the third, and the Huskies had a major power play. Stiven Sardarian scored his second of the game and sixth of the season to put the Huskies back in front 6:41 into the third. Noah Reinhart and Isaac Gordon assisted on the goal.

Late in the game, St. Thomas added the extra attacker and six offensive zone faceoffs. Lucas Van Vliet put in the game-tying goal with 1.2 seconds left to force overtime.

The teams skated most of the overtime 4-on-4 due to penalties late in regulation, and neither team was able to register a scoring opportunity.

In the shootout, Max Koskipirtti, Noah Reinhart, and Teydon Trembecky weren't able to find the back of the net for the Huskies. Lucas Van Vliet had the lone tally in the third round.

The two teams wrap up the CCHA series on Saturday. Faceoff is set for 6:07 p.m. The annual Teddy Bear Toss is Saturday, along with Skate With The Huskies after the game.
