Huskies strong second half not enough to overcome Wildcats Thursday

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team outscored Northern Michigan 46-33 in the second half, including a 13-2 run in over five minutes late in the fourth quarter, but were unable to prevail over the Wildcats, ultimately falling 68-64 at the Vandament Arena on Thursday afternoon.

"It was just too slow of a start," Tech head coach Sam Clayton said. "Credit to Northern—they came ready to play and it took us a half to settle in. I was proud that we didn't give up and fought back to make it a game in the second half but we have to come ready to play."

Michigan Tech (5-8, 2-3 GLIAC) started slow and got behind Northern Michigan (10-3, 4-1 GLIAC) 35-18 by halftime after trailing 17-6 following the opening quarter of action.

The Huskies made strides in the second half with back-to-back quarters of 23 points which included three 3-pointers per quarter and a combined 10-for-11 from the foul line for the half.

Senior guard Isabella Lenz scored seven points for the Black & Gold in the third quarter as sophomore guard Alyssa Wypych added an and-one and a 3-pointer seeing Michigan Tech trail 55-41 with one quarter to play.

Michigan Tech outrebounded Northern Michigan 16-6 in the final quarter of action including eight offensive rebounds helping propel the Huskies back into the contest with under 5:25 to in the game when the 13-2 run began.

First-year Kloe Zentkowski chipped in seven points off the bench with her 3-pointer from Janie Tormanen beginning the lopsided scoring affair. Kendall Standfest also connected from downtown during the run with Wypych hitting two layups in the mix before Tormanen made it a two-point game following a layup with 28 seconds to play.

Northern Michigan went two-for-four from the foul line down the stretch to secure the 68-64 victory on Thursday.

Lenz (16 points) and Wypych (14 points) reached double-digit scoring for the Black & Gold as Tormanen secured a team-high 10 rebounds.

Abi Fraaza (13 points) and Nimz (11 points) led the Wildcats in scoring as Romero controlled the glass with six boards.
