HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team earned a weekend split with a 3-0 sweep of Davenport on Saturday at the SDC Gym. The Huskies won 26-24, 25-23, and 25-20 to improve to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC.
"We wanted to come out of the weekend with something for sure. It's no shame to split with Ferris and Davenport," Tech coach
Matt Jennings said. "I thought parts of our game last night were good enough to win, and we played well today. We look forward to being home again next weekend."
Tech led by as many as three in the first set, but Davenport stayed close and took a setpoint lead at 24-22. The Huskies turned to the veterans to get out of the hole with back-to-back kills by
Meg Raabe, a kill by
Kaycee Meiners to turn it to a home setpoint, and then Raabe put down the winner. The Huskies hit .485 in the opening frame with three different players tallying at least four kills.
The Huskies built a six-point advantage midway through the second set and again the Panthers wouldn't go away, tying the match at 22. Tech took the 2-0 lead at the break after a
Meg Raabe kill and a pair of errors by Davenport.
Brynn Erickson had 10 digs in the second while Raabe and
Rachel Zurek tallied three kills.
The Black and Gold used a 5-0 run on the serve of
Jacqueline Yancy late in the third set to take control. The offense got spread out with five different Huskies tallying a pair of kills. Yancy put down a kill for setpoint and a Panthers miscue on the other side of the net gave Tech its second sweep of the season.
Meg Raabe finished with a match-high 11 kills while hitting .379.
Rachel Zurek (9),
Kaycee Meiners (7), and
Paige Wagner (6) all had over five kills and hit over .300.
Tess Hayes racked up 35 assists and a career-high 18 digs.
The Huskies remain at home next weekend, hosting Lake Superior State on Friday and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.
