PREVIEW: Volleyball travels downstate for a pair

WEEKEND MATCHES
• Michigan Tech wraps up the regular season with four matches.
• The Huskies play this weekend at Davenport on Friday and No. 1 Ferris State on Saturday.
• The regular season wraps up next weekend at Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State
• Tech is 13-10 overall and 7-6 in the GLIAC.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS

• Davenport is 9-15 overall and 5-8 in the GLIAC. The Panthers are 5-6 on their home court.
• DU is third in the conference in opposing hitting percentage (.203).
• Abby Alan (3.44 k/s) and Rachel Young Blood (2.54 k/s) lead the offense. Mehl Hansen (7.89 a/s) sets the attack and Hayley Carr (3.85 d/s) leads the defense.
• Charley Andrews is in her first season as head coach.
• Davenport went 12-18 overall last season and 8-10 in the GLIAC. The Panthers were picked seventh in the GLIAC Preseason Poll.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
• Ferris State is 24-0 overall and 13-0 in the GLIAC.
• The Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the AVCA/Taraflex Top 25 Poll for the second time in school history.
• FSU leads the nation in hitting percentage and the conference in aces per set, assists per set, and kills pet set.
• Olivia Henneman-Dallape leads the GLIAC in kills per set (4.28), Chelsie Freeman is second in hitting percentage (.379), and Kaylee Maat is fourth in assists per set (9.69).
• FSU went 27-8 overall last season and claimed the GLIAC Tournament Championship along with making the school's 27th all-time trip to the NCAA tournament.
• The Bulldogs were picked first in the GLIAC Preseason Poll and return five all-conference players from 2023.
 
FIRST MEETING
• Davenport – Tech earned a weekend split with a 3-0 sweep of Davenport at the SDC Gym on Sept. 28. The Huskies won 26-24, 25-23, and 25-20. Meg Raabe finished with a match-high 11 kills while hitting .379. Rachel Zurek (9), Kaycee Meiners (7), and Paige Wagner (6) all had over five kills and hit over .300. Tess Hayes racked up 35 assists and a career-high 18 digs.
• Ferris State – The Huskies fell 3-0 to No. 7-ranked Ferris State on Sept. 27 at the SDC Gym. The Bulldogs won 25-19, 25-22, and 25-21. Jacqueline Yancy led the Huskies with 12 kills, while Paige Wagner also got into double figures on 10 kills while hitting .421. Meg Raabe added six kills, and Kaycee Meiners hit .556 with five kills. Tess Hayes set the attack with 29 assists, and Brooke Dzwik led the defense with 12 digs.

LAST TIME OUT
• Tech went 2-1 last week with a midweek five-set loss to Northern Michigan, followed by sweeps of Parkside and Purdue Northwest, all at the SDC Gym.
• Meg Raabe led the offense (4.45 k/s), Tess Hayes set the attack (11.27 a/s), and Amelia Albers led the defense (4.91 d/s).
 
CROSSOVER ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Tess Hayes was named to the Midwest Regional Crossover All-Tournament Team. • Hayes averaged 10.8 assists and 2.7 digs per set.
• She tallied 24 assists and seven digs in a loss to No. 19 Quincy, 39 assists and eight digs in a sweep of Tiffin, and 45 assists and 12 digs in a victory over Findlay.
• Hayes leads the GLIAC in assists per set (10.49) and service aces per set (0.51).
 
GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Sept. 9 – Tess Hayes – GLIAC Setter of the Week
 
UP NORTH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Rachel Zurek was named to the UP North All-Tournament Team.
• She hit .468 on the weekend while averaging 2.3 kills per set.
 
OREDIGGER CLASSIC MVP
• Junior Meg Raabe was named MVP on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.6 kills and 4.0 points per set on the weekend.
• She tallied 54 kills, 14 digs, 8 blocks, 2 assists, and 2 aces in the opening weekend.

COACH JENNINGS
• Head coach Matt Jennings is in his 13th season with the Huskies and has won 219 matches overall. He ranks second in wins in program history.
• Jennings is the chair of NCAA Volleyball Championships Committee. It's the sixth year working on NCAA postseason matters.
• Under Jennings, the Huskies have gone from last place in the conference to nationally ranked and consistently in the NCAA Tournament.
• Jennings coached the Huskies to four straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2017-21.
• He was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2017 and led the team to a program record of 10 straight wins to start the 2016 season.
• The 2021 spring team won a GLIAC Regular Season title for the second time in program history with the 2021 team repeating the feat in outright fashion.

LAST SEASON
• Tech finished the 2023 season 15-16 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the GLIAC.
• The Huskies advanced the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal for the seventh straight season as the fourth seed.
