HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team was shut out for the second consecutive game in an always physical bout with Ferris State, 2-0 at Kearly Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Although Michigan Tech (4-5-0, 2-4-0 GLIAC) once again outshot the opposition (11-4), Ferris State (4-1-1, 3-1-0 GLIAC) made the most of its chances earning two goals on four shots on goal.
"We did not play well, I told our team after the game that we can't come out and not execute and then dig ourselves a hole and that's what we did," Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar said. "We played better in the second half but it was a shocking first half which is frustrating because that's not our team. Credit to Ferris State they capitalized on our mistakes—everything on the scouting report panned out exactly how it was and we just didn't execute the simple details."
In a windy and rather chilly early October afternoon, Ferris State struck twice in the first half with the first goal coming from Haley Buckman in the 16th minute and Katherine Welch in the 29th minute to put the Huskies in a 2-0 deficit just after the halfway point of the first period.
Buckman earned the game-winner with an aggressive play in the Huskies' defensive zone as Katherine Welch won a battle for a loose ball delivering the pass to Haley Buckman beating Tech's goalkeeper Bri Barrows with a shot to the low right corner. Welch earned her fourth assist of the season on the play.
Less than 13 minutes later, Welch got the Bulldogs' second goal of the game after stealing the ball deep in the Huskies' defensive end having just Barrows to beat with a shot from the right foot going low into the left corner of the goal.
MTU posted four shots in the first frame with Olivia Gette accounting for two shots on goal stopped by the Bulldogs goalkeeper. The best look of the day for the Black & Gold came in the 60th minute with a header from veteran Kiersen Korienek hitting the corner post, allowing the Bulldogs to keep the 2-0 advantage with 30 minutes to play.
The Huskies took four more shots forcing Morgan Fillion to make three saves in a second half that only showcased one shot from FSU coming from Welch in the 63rd minute.
Olivia Gette and Julia Pietila recorded a team-leading three shots on goal while goalkeeper Bri Barrows made two stops in net.
Ferris State's first-year goalkeeper Morgan Fillion made eight stops in goal as Katherine Welch recorded a team-leading two shots on goal.
