Volleyball swept Roosevelt in first meeting

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Roosevelt 3-0 on Saturday at the SDC Gym in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Huskies defeated the Lakers 25-21, 25-20, and 25-16 to improve to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC.

"It was a fun match, and I'm glad we were able to take care of business and win," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "They played well in Marquette last night, and we had our guard up.

"It was the first time I got to coach against Nick who coached here with me in my first season. I think the world of him and that was special."

The Huskies led by as many as seven points in the first set and hit .412. Meg Raabe, Jacqueline Yancy, and Rachel Zurek all tallied four kills in the opening frame. A kill by Kaycee Meiners gave Tech a setpoint lead and errors by the Lakers put the Huskies up 1-0.

Tech used a 5-0 run after a 16-all tie to take control late, and Jacqueline Yancy put down five of the last seven points to give the home team a 2-0 lead at the break. Both teams hit sub .200, but Kaycee Meiners had three blocks and Brooke Dzwik and Tess Hayes combined for three aces.

The Black and Gold jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never trailed in the third. Meg Raabe racked up six kills and Kaycee Meiners added five in the frame, including the clincher.

Meg Raabe (12) and Kaycee Meiners (10) had double digit kills while Jacqueline Yancy added nine and Rachel Zurek seven. Tess Hayes set the attack with 35 assists and added 11 digs. Brynn Erickson tallied 10 digs.

Tech travels to Hammond, Indiana next weekend for the 16th annual Midwest Regional Volleyball Crossover Tournament. The Huskies will play three matches to wrap up non-conference play.

"The GLIAC is a strong league and we'll represent well at the crossover," added Jennings. "We should be in the top bracket playing some really strong teams. It'll be a fun weekend, and we'll be ready for it."
