MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Michigan Tech track and field teams won
five events and finished second in six others to open the season at
the Northern Michigan Challenge Saturday (Feb. 18).
Quinn Parnell won the 55-meter dash (6.46) and finished second in
the 200-meter dash in 22.39. Teammate Tylor Rathsack also made a
strong showing in the sprints finishing fifth in the 200 (23.36)
and seventh in the 55 (6.92).
Tech picked up three wins in the distance events. Dylan Anderson
won the 800 in 1:57.54 while teammate James Steffel was second in
2:01.34. Evan Krettek was fourth (2:05.36).
Jonathon Kilpela won the 3,000-meter (9:08.87) while teammate Jon
Graves finished second (9:11.02). Bradon Kampstra completed the
podium sweep for the Huskies finishing third in 9:15.60.
Nate Hood won the long jump with a leap of 20-10.5 and finished
third in the triple jump (43-10). Jevon Maddox finished fourth in
the triple jump (43-8) and fifth in the long jump (19-6.75).
Tech's final win on the day was in the 5,000 by Eric Parsell in a
time of 15:50.32.
Patrick Spalding finished second in the high jump with a
personal-best leap of 6-0. Ben Kalis finished second in the
55-meter hurdles (8.19), and Nate Saliga was fourth (8.53).
Jared Berrymen finished third in the shot put (41-6.5), and Matt
Savage was fifth (40-5).
Tech finished second, third and fourth in the 4x400-meter relay.
Tech's top-team of Hood, Parnell, Spalding and Saliga (3:37.49)
just edged out the team of Evan Krettek, Rathsack, Anderson and
Karl Koivisto (3:37.54). Tech's team of Sam McKay, Kalis, Maddox
and Brent Cousino finished fourth in a time of 3:47.18.
Tech got three fourth-place finishes on the women's side. Megan
Smaby was fourth in the mile (5:46.97), and Noelle Savage was
fourth in the 5,000-meter (22:05.50). Samm Matson was fifth in the
5,000-meter (24:17.60).
Molly Wiltzius was fourth in the shot put (37-6), and Natalie
Berryman was sixth (35-6.5). Parrisha Louis was sixth in the weight
throw (42-4.75).
Other finishes for the women included Marie Mets who finished
seventh in the 200 (28.88) and ninth in the 400 (1:04.41). Nicholle
Stark finished seventh in the 55-meter dash (8.10).
