HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech started the second half of its
WCHA schedule tonight with a convincing 6-2 victory over Alaska
Anchorage in front of 2,229 fans at the John MacInnes Student Ice
Arena. Six different Huskies scored goals to help the hosts improve
their record to 10-11-1 overall and 7-7-1 in the league.
A three-goal third period helped Tech gain control of the game.
Ryan
Furne and Justin
Fillion both scored in the first two minutes of the frame, and
the Seawolves replaced goaltender Chris Kamal with Dusan Sidor. David
Johnstone added another tally at the 17:33 mark of the period
to break the game open.
"It was good to get goals tonight," said Mel
Pearson. "We hadn't scored very well for a few games, so it was
good to see the pucks go in the net."
Furne ended up with three points on the evening with a goal and
two assists. David
Johnstone (goal, assist), Blake
Pietila (goal, assist) and Milos
Gordic (two assists) all tallied multi-point games as well.
UAA (6-11-1, 3-11-1 WCHA) jumped on the scoreboard just 2:24
into the game as Derek Docken fired the puck past a screened Josh
Robinson in net.
It took the Black and Gold only 90 seconds to answer, as Tanner
Kero pounded home a loose puck in front of Kamal. The score
remained 1-1 until Chad
Pietila registered his first goal as a Husky. The tally came on
a three-on-one rush as Dennis
Rix made a nice pass to Pietila, who finished with a wrister
over Kamal's glove shoulder.
The margin grew to 5-1 during the second period. Furne sniped a
goal from the left circle and Fillion sent a bouncing puck into the
net from the blue line for his first career goal.
UAA gained a little spark when Sidor replaced Kamal just 1:38
into the second. The visitors held a 11-9 shot advantage in the
period, but it was Tech who scored the next goal. Milos
Gordic brought the puck into the zone, reversed direction
behind the net and fed a pass to Johnstone for a wide open net.
The Seawolves pulled back within three in the final minute of
the second on a Tyler Currier goal as the defenseman jabbed one
through traffic in the crease.
Tech killed off three penalties in the third period, and Blake
Pietila capped the scoring with just 4:47 to play.
Both teams were scoreless on the power play (Tech 0-4, UAA 0-5).
Robinson finished with 25 saves. Kamal (10) and Sidor (13) combined
for 23.
"It's a good win," said Pearson. "You have to take care of your
home games. We did tonight, and now we have to go out and do it
again tomorrow."
The teams will wrap up their two-game weekend series and
four-game season series with a 7 p.m. faceoff tomorrow.
Notes: Tech has secured its first 10-win season since the
2007-08 squad was 14-20-5 ... The six-goal output was the most by
the Huskies since a 7-2 win over Denver earlier this season (Oct.
28).
