Huskies' Defense Stifles UIndy in 28-16 Victory

Box Score

HOUGHTON, Mich. - No. 22-ranked Michigan Tech won its seventh straight home football game with a 28-16 victory over Indianapolis today at Sherman Field. Quarterback Tyler Scarlett completed 16-of-19 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns to help the Huskies improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC play.

Tech continued to play its ball possession game today, holding onto the pigskin for nearly 38 of the game's 60 minutes. In doing that, the Huskies put together scoring drives of 77, 57, 60 and 92 yards. Head coach Tom Kearly called that a key to the victory.

"Anytime you can stay on the field and put together long drives, it's good for your football team. Scarlett played a very mature game today. He was very efficient, and that's what we're looking for from him right now."

Tech set the tone in the opening minutes, holding the Greyhounds on downs deep in Huskies' territory.

The Black and Gold then put together a 13-play, 77-yard drive to paydirt. Akeem Cason scored on a three-yard run, taking a hit at the line, then driving forward into the endzone with 3:19 showing on the first quarter clock.

UIndy answered by driving the field. The visitors had eight plays inside the 15 before finally scoring on a low-thrown, one-yard pass from Chris Mills to Ryan Forney. Officials hesitated for several moments before finally ruling that the ball hadn't hit the turf before reaching Forney.

Tech came right back down the field, leading up to a perfect fade pass from Scarlett to tight end Bryan LaChapelle at the deep left pylon. The score came with 5:05 left in the second quarter.

Both teams managed to score again before the intermission. UIndy got a 41-yard field goal from Scott Miller with 1:23 remaining.

Michigan Tech then drove 60 yards in three plays ending in another superb pass from Scarlett. The rookie lofted one down the left sideline to a streaking Steve Worthy who kept a foot inbounds in the endzone for a 32-yard strike at the :36 mark.

After halftime, the teams traded punts. Tech then drove 92 yards on 15 plays as Scarlett hit four-of-four passes and fullback Cole Welch picked up three first downs rushing. Cedrick Barber capped the drive from two yards out for a 28-10 lead.

Starting Greyhound quarterback Chris Mills left the game with injury following a hit from Todd Storm in the third quarter.

UIndy kept its hopes alive by tackling punter Jordan Ledvina at the Huskies' 21 after a bad snap. Backup quarterback Rob Doyle threw a jump ball to Mar'Quone Edwards in the endzone on the very next play to pull the Greyhounds within 12 points. Storm sacked Doyle on the ensuing two-point conversion try, leaving the score 28-16.

The Huskies were able to maintain the advantage for the final 9:30 by picking up a couple first downs and sacking Doyle three more times. UIndy turned the ball over on downs each of its final two possessions.

Tech held the Greyhounds 21 points and 200 yards (total offense) below their seasonal averages. The Black and Gold amassed 305 yards of total offense compared to UIndy's 244, which included just 18 rushing yards.

Tech's defensive performance was even more impressive since the Huskies played without two All-GLIAC players in defensive end Drew Vanderlin and cornerback Quinn Parnell. Both were questionable all week with injury and were held out.

Nelson Weinke (1.5 sacks) and Aaron Allen (three pass breakups) both had strong games filling in for the injured Huskies.

Storm led the team in tackles with seven including 2.0 for loss. Jesse Vandenberg and Justin Armstrong added six apiece.

Cason led all rushers with 69 yards. Barber added 61 in a solid one-two punch for the Huskies.

Scarlett used seven different receivers in the game. Worthy had another stellar game with four catches for 58 yards and the touchdown. LaChapelle caught three balls for 40 yards.

Michigan Tech will hit the road next weekend for its first-ever trip to Ohio Dominican. Kickoff in Columbus, Ohio, next Saturday (Oct. 1) is set for noon.

Notes: Worthy has a touchdown reception in three straight games ... Attendance was 2,111 at Sherman Field ... The game was UIndy's final trip to Houghton for the foreseeable future. The Greyhounds are leaving the GLIAC following the 2011 season.
