Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. - No. 22-ranked Michigan Tech scored the first 27 points of the game before halftime and never looked back on its way to a 41-10 GLIAC football victory over Lake Erie today at Sherman Field. Freshman quarterback Tyler Scarlett completed 15-of-21 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Huskies to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
"We got out of the blocks early on them, and that was important today," said head coach Tom Kearly. "You never feel good until the game is over with Lake Erie because they can pick up yards in a hurry.
"They stacked the box defensively, and we were able to make some plays getting the ball to the outside."
Tech amassed 506 yards of total offense and held the visiting Storm to 261 yards. Tailbacks Cedrick Barber (100 yards) and Akeem Cason (77) chewed up 177 of those yards on the ground.
The Huskies led after one quarter thanks to a two-year Scarlett-to-Bryan LaChapelle touchdown pass.
The Black and Gold forced a three-and-out by Lake Erie on the ensuing possession, then put together their most impressive drive of the season.
Tech took over at its own three-yard line, then ran 22 consecutive plays spanning 9:43 and capped by a one-yard Barber run.
Cason added his third TD of the season with 5:22 left in the half (the extra point was missed). Steve Worthy made it 27-0 less than four minutes later with nice grab at the goal line on a 34-yard pass from Scarlett.
The Storm were able to break up the shutout with a 38-yard field goal with :30 remaining before half.
Tech put more points on the board with its first drive of the second half, going 63 yards on 11 plays as Cole Welch dove into the endzone on fourth and goal from the one.
Lake Erie tallied its only touchdown of the day with 7:37 left in the third quarter. Quarterback Sean Bedevelsky faked a pitch, then kept it himself on a seven-yard run.
Scarlett's 28-yard pass to Justin Springer at the 3:05 mark of the third quarter capped the day's scoring.
Tech spread the ball around on offense all day as seven different players had carries and eight caught passes. Pat Carroll hauled in a team-high five balls for 69 yards.
The Huskies defense played another strong game-especially up front where they got to Bedevelsky for four sacks.
Linebacker Justin Armstrong posted a team-high 11 tackles. Defensive backs Chet White and Ben Foelker added seven apiece. Quinn Parnell had two pass breakups on the day including an interception and 49-yard return in the second quarter.
Michigan Tech will travel to face Wayne State in Detroit next Saturday (Sept. 17) in a battle of nationally-ranked squads. The No. 16 Warriors will also enter the game with a 2-0 overall record and 1-0 GLIAC mark.
Notes: Barber tallied his first career 100-yard rushing game ... Jacob Clark posted 2.0 sacks on the day and now has a team-leading 3.0 on the season ... Tech has won six straight games overall and six consecutive home games dating back to last year.
