HOUGHTON, Mich. - Patrick
McCadden and Milos
Gordic each scored for the Michigan Tech hockey team as it
skated to a 2-2 tie with Bemidji State in front of a crowd of 2,572
in the first game of Winter Carnival Friday (Feb. 11). The Beavers,
who are competing in their first year in the WCHA, finished with a
slim 34-29 advantage in shots.
"I thought our kids did a terrific job of making sure that we were
focused in the third period in a tight game, " said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We had great chances to win."
The Beavers would strike first in the first period with a goal by
Ian Lowe. Jordan George sent a pass to Lowe on an odd-man rush for
Lowe's 10th goal of the season at 16:24.
McCadden evened the score with a great individual effort at 8:42 of
the second period. BSU goalie Dan Bakala was caught out of the net
after a poor defensive clear that landed right on the stick of
McCadden for his second goal of the season.
Gordic then gave the Huskies its first lead of the game with his
team-leading 13th goal of the season at 7:13 of the third period.
Jacob
Johnstone intercepted a pass behind the net before sending a
pass in front to Gordic.
The Tech lead would be short lived as the Beavers scored their
second goal of the game three minutes later. Aaron McLeod fired a
high wrist shot past Tech goalie Kevin
Genoe for his third goal of the season at 10:16.
Tech nearly came away with the win in overtime, but Bakala stopped
a hard shot by Tyler Gubb with under one minute remaining.
Genoe finished with 32 saves for the Huskies, while his counterpart
Bakala made 27 for the Beavers.
Tech finished 0-5 on the man-advantage while holding Bemidji
0-3.
The two teams will continue the battle for the Winter Carnival
crown Saturday (Feb. 12).
