HOUGHTON, Mich. - Mark Zengerle scored the game-winning goal at
13:46 of the second period to lift No. 7 Wisconsin to a 4-2 win
over Michigan Tech in WCHA play Friday (Jan. 28).
"I did not like our first period," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We passed up opportunities to shoot. In the second
period we shot from everywhere and it paid off."
The Huskies had the first quality scoring chance six minutes into
the game which ended with a shot by Brett
Olson hitting the post.
The Badgers scored the first goal of the game shortly after. Podge
Turnbull scored his 11th goal of the season at 6:37.
Alex
MacLeod evened the score at 1-1 with his sixth goal of the
season less than one minute into the second period. Brett
Olson and Steven
Seigo each assisted on the goal.
Evan
Witt scored his first goal of the season two minutes later to
give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Alan L'Esperance assisted on the goal
for his first career point. Daniel
Holmberg also assisted on the goal.
Jake Gardiner tallied his seventh goal of the year at 13:17 to tie
the game at 2-2 before Zengerie scored the game-winner less than 30
seconds later.
The Badgers would add one more goal unassisted off the stick of
Tyler Barnes at 13:12 of the third period.
Tech scored at the end of regulation but the goal was disallowed
after a review proved that it was scored after time had
expired.
Tech held the Badgers, who entered the contest with the second
ranked power-play in the nation, scoreless on all three of their
power-play opportunities.
Josh
Robinson started in goal for the Huskies making 19 saves. Kevin
Genoe replaced Robinson following the Badgers third goal. He
gave up one goal and finished with 19 saves.
Scott Gudmandson made 24 saves for UW.
The two teams will wrap-up the season series Saturday (Jan.
29).
