Huskies Beat UIndy 24-10 Behind Dominant Defense

Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS - Michigan Tech's defense dominated for a third straight week to help the Huskies' football team defeat Indianapolis 24-10 at Key Stadium today. Tech allowed the Greyhounds just 14 yards rushing and one touchdown on the day to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0.

"We played really, really well defensively," said head coach Tom Kearly. "Our offense put the defense in some bad spots, but the defense kept Indy out of the endzone.

"Our offensive players thanked the defensive guys after the game."

The game flowed very similarly to the first two this season. The final outcome was very much in doubt until the Huskies controlled the ball in the second half.

Today, Tech held the ball for 22 of the final 30 minutes and chewed up 172 yards on the ground in the frame.

"Time of possession is big," said Kearly. "It's a lot easier to play defense when you're on the sideline."

The drive of the game started with 1:30 left in the third quarter and lasted until the 8:18 mark of the fourth. Tech strung together 15 straight runs to go 91 yards. Akeem Cason capped the drive with a six-yard touchdown.

That score gave Tech a two touchdown lead and wiped out 8:12 off the clock.

Steve Short fumbled on a quarterback keeper with 5:24 left to play to give the Greyhounds hope. Kaleb Ogden found Mar'Quone Edmonds on a 42-yard strike to put the ball at the Michigan Tech two. The Huskies' defense stood tall, holding UIndy on downs thanks in large part to a big sack by Drew Vanderlin on third down.

Tech took over the ball and was able to run down the clock for the win.

For the third straight game, tailback Phil Milbrath went over 100 yards. He rushed 27 times for 133 and a touchdown. He also hauled in three passes for 37 yards and a score.

Short passed for 182 yards and rushed for 65 more to improve to 23-11 as a starting quarterback.

He threw three first-half interceptions, however. The first bounced off Pat Carroll's hands and was returned to the Tech 11. Tech held the Greyhounds to a 20-yard field goal.

The other two interceptions were taken at midfield and resulted in no points.

Tech grabbed the lead for good at 5:36 of the second quarter with a six-yard touchdown run by Milbrath set up by a 79-yard pass play from Short to Carroll.

The halftime score was 7-3 in favor of the visitors.

The Huskies opened the second half with a 69-yard drive capped by an 11-yard swing pass from Short to Milbrath.

UIndy answered on the next play from scrimmage as Chris Mills hit Edmonds for a 56-yard strike.

Tyler Cattelino kicked a 42-yard field goal to give Tech a 17-10 lead with 3:37 left in the quarter. After a three-and-out, Tech pounded the line 15 straight times on the key drive and controlled things from there.

Michigan Tech held a 429-241 advantage in yards of total offense. The big differential was in rushing yards, where the Huskies racked up 247 compared to 14 for UIndy.

Jesse Vandenberg totaled 13 tackles including 1.5 for loss to lead the Huskies' defense. He was named Superior Player of the Game. Chet White tallied his second interception of the season.

Michigan Tech will return to Sherman Field next Saturday (Oct. 2) for Homecoming festivities. The Huskies will host Ohio Dominican at 1 p.m.
