UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Michigan Tech dropped its Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Saginaw Valley
State tonight by a 3-1 count. The Huskies (1-4, 0-1) tried to
battle through a major injury but couldn't come up with enough
firepower. The Cardinals (3-2, 1-0) won by scores of 25-19, 15-25,
25-16 and 25-18.
Junior rightside hitter
Kathleen Storm suffered a knee injury
five minutes into the match and did not return. The Huskies
adjusted their gameplan to win set two convincingly, but couldn't
completely overcome the unbalanced lineup.
"Storm had two kills on her first five swings, so it was a big
loss," said head coach
Orlando Gonzalez. I thought we recovered
nicely in set two after the injury and played well, but we just
weren't the same team without her in the lineup."
SVSU hit .500 in set three and .300 in the deciding frame to
finish at .314 for the match. Tech tallied a hitting percentage of
.200 for the night.
Senior
Alicia Schneider had a very big night with 13 kills and
a .391 percentage. Junior
Kristine Sexton had 40 attack attempts
with a match-high 16 kills for a .300 percentage.
The Huskies will make a quick trip to Allendale, Mich., to
play at Grand Valley State at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
