Huskies Defeat SMSU 74-53 in Women's Hoops

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Michigan Tech moved to 3-0 on the season with a 74-53 victory over Southwest Minnesota State today in the first game of the Radisson Roseville Thanksgiving Basketball Classic hosted by Concordia-St. Paul. The Huskies played a superior game on defense, limiting the Mustangs to 30 percent field goal shooting and just 22 points in the second half.

"Our defense was pretty good," said head coach Kim Cameron. "We had a little lapse the last 10 minutes of the first half, and that can't happen. But our offense was able to take advantage of some height mismatches and get points from Lucy (Dernovsek) and Lindsey (Lindstrom) inside. Overall, we're happy to get the win."

Tech put together a12-0 run midway through the first half that was capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Dernovsek and Sam Hoyt. The spurt led to a 16-point advantage for the Huskies. The Mustangs battled back to within four under a minute before Lynn Giesler added a layup to send Tech into halftime with a 37-31 lead.

In the second half, Dernovsek and Hoyt tallied back-to-back 3-pointers again to help push the margin to eight. Tech allowed SMSU just one field goal over the next 10 minutes. That defensive effort allowed the Black and Gold the opportunity to grow their lead to more than 20. Angela Guisfredi's 3-pointer at the 5:02 mark made the score 64-40, and the Huskies cruised from there.

Dernovsek, who played just 23 minutes in the contest, finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Lindstrom posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Hoyt reached double figures with 11 points. Freshman Kate Glodowski came off the bench and did not miss a shot, going 3-of-3 for eight points.

Tech had an accurate shooting day at 55 percent from the field including 9-of-15 (60 percent) from 3-point range. The Huskies also enjoyed a 36-25 rebounding edge.

Michigan Tech will face host Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow at 4 p.m.
