HOUGHTON, Mich. - Ryan
Furne recorded a career-high three points (one goal, two
assists), but the Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 6-4 decision
to No. 19 Minnesota at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena tonight.
The home game was the first for the Huskies since Oct. 16th.
"I felt that in the first 10 minutes a good majority of our team
was wondering who is going to step-up," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "You can't get down 3-0 and expect to win games."
The Gophers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period.
Max Gardiner scored at 2:02 and Mike Hoeffel added a pair of goals
at 5:13 and 7:28.
Despite the early deficit and playing without senior captain Brett
Olson, the Huskies battled back.
Ryan
Furne took advantage of a poor clear by the Gophers from behind
their own net midway through the period, scoring his fourth goal of
the season unassisted on the power play.
Milos
Gordic added a second power-play goal for the Huskies with 26
seconds remaining in the first period. He pounded home a rebound
off Furne's initial shot. Jacob
Johnstone also assisted on the goal.
Minnesota won the second period behind a pair of power-play goals
by Jake Hansen for a 5-2 lead at the second intermission.
The Huskies pulled within 5-3 on Gordic's second goal at 13:49. The
Gophers iced the game a minute and a half later.
A piece of plexiglass shattered with three minutes to play, halting
the action for 15 minutes while arena staff replaced the broken
pane. Holmberg finished off scoring at the 19:16 mark with a goal
directly off the faceoff.
Tech (3-5-2, 1-5-1) finished two-for-three on the power play and
Minnesota (6-4-1, 4-4-1) was two-for-four.
Kevin
Genoe finished with a season-high 44 saves in net for the
Huskies. Kent Patterson tallied 19 saves for the Gophers.
Tech and Minnesota will face-off again tomorrow at 7:07 p.m.
