MADISON, Wis. - No. 18 Wisconsin rallied from a 2-0 deficit to
defeat Michigan Tech 5-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association
action Friday (Oct. 29). The win was the first for the Badgers
(4-2-1, 1-1-) this season in WCHA play. The loss was the first for
the Huskies (3-1-2, 1-1-1) this season and snaps the team's
five-game unbeaten streak.
"A bounce here, a bounce there and it could have been a different
game," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "Wisconsin definitely won the special teams battle
tonight."
The Tech offense went right to work scoring less than two minutes
into the game. Freshman Jacob
Johnstone fired a shot on goal that was turned aside by Scottt
Gudmandson. The rebound fell right to freshman Ryan
Furne who buried the shot on the doorstep for his second goal
of the season.
The Huskies would tack on one more goal before the first
intermission. Junior Ricky
Doriott scored his first career goal with a wrist shot from the
slot at 18:15. Freshman Milos
Gordic and sophomore Carl
Nielsen each assisted on the goal.
The Badgers answered in the second period with a pair of goals.
Jake Gardiner sent a shot through traffic that was redirected by
Michael Mersch on its way to the goal. Craig Smith also assisted on
the goal at 9:53.
The Huskies found themselves on the penalty kill after being
whistled for a five-minute checking from behind call late in the
period. Tech nearly scored twice on the penalty kill with quality
shots on goal by juniors Brett
Olson and Alex
MacLeod.
The Badgers, who entered the game second in the league on the power
play behind Michigan Tech, netted a power-play goal by Podge
Turnbull at 17:33.
UW broke the 2-all tie in the third with three more goals. Patrick
Johnson scored on the doorstep at 7:45, and Michael Mersch
redirected another shot at 13:26. The Badgers tacked on an empty
net goal at 19:55.
Sophomore Kevin
Genoe (2-1-1) made 27 saves on 31 shots for the Huskies.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series Saturday.
