Wisconsin Rallies for 5-2 Hockey Win Over Michigan Tech

MADISON, Wis. - No. 18 Wisconsin rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Michigan Tech 5-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday (Oct. 29). The win was the first for the Badgers (4-2-1, 1-1-) this season in WCHA play. The loss was the first for the Huskies (3-1-2, 1-1-1) this season and snaps the team's five-game unbeaten streak.

"A bounce here, a bounce there and it could have been a different game," said head coach Jamie Russell. "Wisconsin definitely won the special teams battle tonight."

The Tech offense went right to work scoring less than two minutes into the game. Freshman Jacob Johnstone fired a shot on goal that was turned aside by Scottt Gudmandson. The rebound fell right to freshman Ryan Furne who buried the shot on the doorstep for his second goal of the season.

The Huskies would tack on one more goal before the first intermission. Junior Ricky Doriott scored his first career goal with a wrist shot from the slot at 18:15. Freshman Milos Gordic and sophomore Carl Nielsen each assisted on the goal.

The Badgers answered in the second period with a pair of goals.

Jake Gardiner sent a shot through traffic that was redirected by Michael Mersch on its way to the goal. Craig Smith also assisted on the goal at 9:53.

The Huskies found themselves on the penalty kill after being whistled for a five-minute checking from behind call late in the period. Tech nearly scored twice on the penalty kill with quality shots on goal by juniors Brett Olson and Alex MacLeod.

The Badgers, who entered the game second in the league on the power play behind Michigan Tech, netted a power-play goal by Podge Turnbull at 17:33.

UW broke the 2-all tie in the third with three more goals. Patrick Johnson scored on the doorstep at 7:45, and Michael Mersch redirected another shot at 13:26. The Badgers tacked on an empty net goal at 19:55.

Sophomore Kevin Genoe (2-1-1) made 27 saves on 31 shots for the Huskies.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series Saturday.
