Tech Sets Record in 62-30 GLIAC Win over Northwood

Box Score
HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech tallied its highest point total ever in a GLIAC football game today in a 62-30 win over Northwood. Running back Phil Milbrath scored five touchdowns and the Huskies added two more on special teams to improve to 5-2 on the season. Tech's 62-point performance was its best against any opponent (including non-GLIAC foes) since a 76-point day vs. Manitoba at Sherman Field in 1992.

"All in all, it was a very good team effort," said head coach Tom Kearly. "We said all week we needed to hit our big plays, and I think we did hit just about all of them. That was key."

Milbrath's career day included 250 yards and three touchdowns rushing and 27 yards and two TDs receiving. He scored on runs at lengths of 63 and 76 yards in the contest. "I was feeling pretty good today," he said. "The offensive line did a great job opening up running lanes. My legs felt good, and I think that allowed me the extra speed."

Tech totaled 485 yards of total offense including a season-high 304 on the ground. Northwood, with its unique wishbone option style offense, was held to 171 yards rushing and 307 total yards-its second-lowest output of the season.

A wild first half saw the Huskies put up 41 points. For the fifth time this season, Tech's opponent scored first. Northwood scored on its first drive thanks to a 48 run by Jimmy Parsons on an option play that set up a four-yard run five plays later.

It took Tech 32 seconds to answer. Milbrath found a seam and went 63 yards down the right sideline to tie the game at 7-all.

The Huskies's got the ensuing stop, then marched 60 yards in 3:38 for another score. Milbrath took a screen pass from Steve Short at the line of scrimmage and did the rest, going 23 yards to paydirt.

Later in the first quarter, it was a one-play drive-a 47-yard pass from Short to Matt Curtin-that put the Huskies up 21-7.

Milbrath scored again at the 8:58 mark of the second quarter with a six-yard touchdown run after he had gone 26 yards on the previous play. Tyler Cattelino missed his first extra point of the season leaving the score 27-7.

Tech really broke open the game with its second punt block touchdown in as many weeks. Emanuel Parmele blocked Tony Hite's punt at the 11-yard line, then recovered it in the endzone for the score and a 34-7 advantage.

Northwood put 10 straight points on the board to get back within 34-17 at the 3:39 mark. Milbrath then tallied his fourth TD of the half on another screen pass, cutting inside a defender at the five to give the Huskies a 41-17 lead heading into halftime.

The wild scoring plays didn't stop at intermission. The hosts opened the second half with a 93-yard kickoff return from Akeem Cason to go up 48-17. It was Cason's second kick return TD of the year; he also had one at Lake Erie (Sept. 11).

Milbrath sprinted up the middle for 76 yards at the 8:58 mark of the fourth quarter to make the score 55-24. That was his last action of the day. Backup tailback Cedrick Barber broke off a 39-yard run on Tech's next possession, then finished the drive with a three-yard run for a 62-24 score.

The T'wolves scored on a 25-yard pass play with 27 seconds remaining to account for the final margin.

Michigan Tech lost the turnover battle (minus-1) and the time of possession battle (32:29-to-27:31) but seemingly hit every big play. The Huskies recorded six plays of 30 yards or longer in the game, much to the delight of the 1,923 fans in attendance.

Short was a very efficient 10-of-12 for 181 yards and three touchdowns passing. Curtin was the top target with three catches for 85 yards and a score.

Tech's defense was linebacker Justin Armstrong's eight tackles. Junior defensive end Todd Storm posted his fourth sack in as many games and was also credited with a forced fumble.

Cason, in addition to his 93-yard return, had a 64-yard kickoff return reduced to a 37-yarder because of a holding call. He also registered five tackles on kick coverage.

Michigan Tech will remain at home for its game next week against No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State. Kickoff at Sherman Field is slated for 1 p.m.

Notes: Milbrath's previous career high for rushing yards was 202 vs. Ferris State on Oct. 4, 2008 … Combining today with a 45-6 Homecoming win over Ohio Dominican Oct. 2, Tech has scored 107 points in its last two home games … The Huskies have four special teams touchdowns this season … Tech's previous best GLIAC score was in a 61-23 win over Wayne State in 2004.
