ST. CLOUD, Minn. - No. 15 St. Cloud State scored three power
play goals to earn a 4-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win
over Michigan Tech Friday (Jan. 8) at the National Hockey
Center.
"We asked the players before the game to concentrate on three
things: work hard, compete and play with discipline," said head
coach Jamie Russell. "I will be
honest. I thought we did that."
SCSU opened the game with a power play goal by Drew LeBlanc at 8:14
of the first period.
Tech was whistled for a five-minute major at the start of the
second period, but was able to get a quality scoring chance by
junior Jordan Baker from Eric
Kattelus short handed early in the penalty.
SCSU sophomore Travis Novak scored the second power play goal of
the evening at 5:36 of the second period. Junior Nick Oslund
extended the St. Cloud lead to 3-0 with his fourth goal of the
season nine seconds after Tech's major penalty expired.
Sophomore Josh Robinson was replaced
by freshman Kevin
Genoe after making 20 saves on 23 shots.
Tech dodged a bullet after Genoe skated to the blue line to corral
a loose puck but a St. Cloud player was able to get a stick on it
and send a shot that hit the pipe with 2:30 remaining in the second
period.
Senior Malcolm Gwilliam opened the
scoring in the third period with his eighth goal of the season at
1:19 of the third period. His shot near the post was deflected by a
defender's stick over SCSU junior goalie Dan Dunn. Junior Bennett
Royer recorded his first assist of the season on the goal,
while freshman Carl
Nielsen picked up his second.
Junior Tony Mosey recorded the final power play goal for SCSU at
9:04, but junior Jordan Baker added a power
play goal of his own at 19:44 to complete the scoring.
Genoe finished with 11 saves on 12 shots for Tech and Dunn finished
with 21 saves on 23 shots for St. Cloud.
Tech (3-17-0, 2-13-0) and St. Cloud (11-7-3, 8-5-2) will wrap-up
the season series tomorrow (Jan. 9) at 5:07 pm.
