FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team picked
up its first win in a pair of five-set matches today (Sept. 4) in
Florida. Tech post a 3-2 win over Palm Beach Atlantic before
dropping a 3-2 decision to Lynn in the second match of the day.
The teams battle through an extended first match with the Sailfish
claiming a 32-30 decision. The Huskies turned around to dominate
the second set 25-17. Palm Beach Atlantic won game three (25-19),
but Michigan Tech was triumphant in the fourth (25-23) to push a
decisive fifth set. The Huskies took the set, 15-12, for their
first win of the season, and the first under head coach Orlando Gonzalez.
Sophomore Kristine Sexton recorded a
match-high 21 kills on 59 attempts to finish with a .220 attack
percentage. She also finished with three block assists.
Senior Veronica Armstrong added a
double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs.
Michigan Tech's opening set against Lynn also went into extra
points with the Huskies claiming a 26-24 win. The two teams would
flip-flop wins with Lynn claiming sets two and four to set up
another decisive fifth set. The Huskies came out on the short end
this time, losing 15-12.
Sexton and Armstrong once again led the team in kills, with 12 and
13 kills respectively. Armstrong also added 19 digs to tally her
second double-double of the day.
Freshman Madeline Haben
finished the day with 90 assists over the two matches, and senior
Kaari Nevanen led the team
with 37 digs.
Freshman Lindsey Sathre led
the team with 10 blocks (three solo, seven assisted) over the two
matches.
The Huskies will wrap-up play in the Sharks classic Saturday (Sept.
5) with a pair of matches against Barry and Nova Southeastern.
