HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech won set one but Ferris State won
the next three sets to earn a 3-1 win in front of 614 fans in
attendance for the Huskie's home opener Friday (Sept. 18).
The Huskies (4-8, 2-2) jumped out to an early six point lead at 8-2
en route to claiming a 25-16 win in the opening set. Tech's win was
credited in large part to a .364 attack percentage.
The Huskies powerful attack continued into the second set as they
hit .314 in the set. Unfortunately for the Huskies the Bulldogs
(10-4, 3-1) hit .406 and came away with a 25-21 decision in set
two.
FSU's blocking played a major role over the final two sets (25-20,
25-22). The Bulldogs tallied seven of its nine blocks over the
final two sets.
Arielle Goodson led FSU with a match-high seven blocks and added a
match-high 15 kills.
"They've got physical players with some size," said head coach Orlando Gonzalez on
Ferris State's blocking. "We made the same mistakes that we made
early on with the blocking situation. They're going to get their
share of blocks because they're a big physical team in the
middle."
Sophomore Kristine Sexton and senior
Veronica Armstrong each
recorded nine kills to lead the Huskies. Armstrong also added 11
digs.
Tech also finished with eight service aces compared to five for
Ferris.
"We've been a pretty good serving team. I'm not sure what caused
four service errors in the fourth game. When you combine serving
with passing that makes us a strong team. When we do both of those
things well we're tough to stop."
Tech will close the weekend with a GLIAC match against Grand Valley
State Saturday (Sept. 19) at the SDC at 4 pm.
