SIOUX TAKE GAME ONE 5-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Senior defenseman Brad Miller recorded three assists to lift the No. 6 North Dakota hockey team to a 5-1 win over Michigan Tech in the first game of the WCHA playoffs Friday (March 13).

UND scored the only goal in the first period at 17:04 when sophomore Matt Frattin sent a pass to junior Chris VandeVelde who had snuck behind the Tech defense.

The Sioux extended its lead to 3-0 with goals by senior Ryan Duncan at 3:00 and sophomore Evan Trupp at 6:08 of the second period.

Freshman Alex MacLeod broke up the Sioux shutout with his goal at 6:13 of the third period. Senior John Schwarz sent a shot on net that was redirected by MacLeod for his fifth goal of the season. All five of his goals have come on the power play this season. Senior Alex Gagne recorded his seventh assist of the season on the goal.

Junior Darcy Zajac and freshman Mario Lamoureux each tallied a goal for the Fighting Sioux at 10:31 and 11:13 of the final period.

Freshman Brad Eidsness (23-9-4) made 20 saves for the Sioux.

Senior Rob Nolan (2-16-5) made 26 saves and gave up all five goals. Freshman Josh Robinson made five saves in just under nine minutes of relief work.

The Huskies (6-24-7) were whistled for 11 penalties to eight for the Sioux (23-12-4).

The two teams will face-off again tomorrow (March 14) at 7:07 p.m.
