HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech hockey team tied the WCHA
record for most ties in league play with seven after skating to a
2-2 tie with No. 15 Minnesota Duluth Saturday (Feb. 22). Tech
became the seventh team in league history to record seven ties and
improved on its own record of six set in 1995-96.
Michigan Tech is now 5-22-7 overall and 1-18-7 in WCHA play and
Duluth is 16-9-7 overall and 10-8-6 in the league.
"I thought we played well tonight. I was happy with our
performance," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "I really challenged the team after the second period.
We challenged individuals in the room before the third and we asked
who wanted to step up, who wanted to be a leader, who wants to be
put in that situation to be successful and get the tap on the
shoulder to get the job done."
For the second straight night the Huskies got on the board first.
Sophomore Jordan Baker created a turnover in front of the
Bulldogs bench and then skated in on junior Alex Stalock and scored
his 14th goal of the season unassisted at 7:39 of the first
period.
Senior Michael Gergen tied the game at 1-1 after he scored his
eighth goal of the season off a pass from senior Andrew Carroll.
Senior Nick Kemp also assisted on the goal at 12:36 of the first
period.
UMD took a 2-1 lead in the second period after scoring the lone
power play goal of the game at 13:31 of the second period. Senior
Josh Meyers fired a shot from the blue line that dipped on its way
to the net and hit the cross bar before finding the net. Meyers was
assisted on his eighth goal of the season by freshman Mike
Connolly.
Senior Derek Kitti tied the game at 2-2 with his third
goal of the season at 7:08 of the third. Junior John
Kivisto picked up his fourth assist of the year on the
play.
Freshman Josh Robinson (3-8-2) made 28 saves on 30 shots
in his fifth straight start for the Huskies.
Stalock (15-9-7) made 19 saves on 21 shots for the Bulldogs.
Michigan Tech will take next weekend off (Feb. 28-March 1) before
hosting Minnesota in the final series of the regular season March
6-7.
