HOUGHTON, Mich. - Freshman Milos
Gordic scored his first career goal for Michigan Tech but it
wasn't enough as Lake Superior State came away with the 3-1 win in
a non-conference hockey game Sunday (Oct. 11). The win was the
first for the Lakers (1-1-0) over the Huskies (1-1-0) since Dec.
11, 1999.
"I thought we were undisciplined tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We took unnecessary penalties. We had an edge against
Northern in penalties on Friday night because we earned them. We
moved our feet in Northern's end and we didn't move well enough
tonight."
Tech was whistled for nine penalties for 18 minutes compared to
five penalties for 10 minutes by Lake Superior State.
Senior Zac MacVoy put LSSU on the board early in the first
period with his first goal of the season at 6:21. Junior Chad
Nehring and senior Simon Gysbers were each credited with an assist
on the goal.
Nehring extended the Laker lead to 2-0 thanks to Gysbers who
picked up his second assist of the night. Junior Rick Schofield
also tallied an assist on the power play goal at 12:06 of the
middle period.
The Huskies would pull freshman Kevin
Genoe with just over two minutes remaining for the extra skater
after taking a costly boarding penalty.
The extra skater would pay off as Gordic sent a puck through
traffic that found its way between the legs of Laker junior goalie
Brian Mahoney-Wilson. Senior John Kivisto picked up an
assist on the extra-attacker goal at 18:42 of the third period.
The Lakers would unfortunently answer with a goal of their own
less than 30 seconds later. Schofield faked a shot in the slot
before sending a pass to senior Pat Aubrey for his first goal of
the season. MacVoy also assisted on the power play goal with less
than one minute remaining.
Mahoney-Wilson (1-1-0) made 28 saves on 29 shots for the Lakers
and Genoe (0-1-0) made 29 saves on 32 saves for the Huskies.
"I thought Kevin played well. He certainly kept us on the ice.
Two of those three goals were deflections, and I give credit to
Kevin for what he did in his first game."
Michigan Tech will have a week off before opening WCHA play at
Colorado College on Oct. 23.
