DENVER - Sophomore Anthony Maiani scored with 17 seconds
remaining in overtime to lift No. 5 Denver to a 4-3 win over
Michigan Tech in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action
Friday (Jan. 9). The loss was the first for the Huskies when they
scored three goals since a 5-3 loss at Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 6,
2007.
"We played a solid game tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We had a lot of scoring chances and had a number of
odd man rushes. We were solid defensively and Robbie played great
in net."
DU (14-6-2, 10-4-1) held a slight advantage in shots in the game
34-33 and finished 2-5 on the power play. Michigan Tech (5-16-2,
1-12-2) finished 0-2 on the man advantage.
Senior Derek Kitti scored his first goal of the season,
and the fifth of his career, at 7:18 of the opening period. Junior
Eli Vlaisavljevich chipped a puck up along the
boards to Kitti who fired a wrist shot over the glove of Denver
sophomore goaltender Marc Cheverie.
Denver tied the score at 1-1 with a goal by J.P. Testwuide at 3:33
of the second period. Sophomore Kyle Ostrow skated to the post and
then sent a back pass to Testwuide who beat Tech senior goalie Rob
Nolan who was caught out of position on the play.
The Huskies used a series of solid passes to score their second
goal of the evening. Sophomore Deron
Cousens sent a pass to the corner to sophomore Jordan
Baker who fired a pass in front of the net to senior Alex
Gagne. The Rock Forest, Quebec, native tipped the puck in for
his fourth goal of the season at 8:10.
DU tied the game for a third time with a power play goal at 14:11
by freshman Joe Colborne. He sent a shot on net that hit a Michigan
Tech player before deflecting in the goal.
DU then took the lead with its second power play goal of the night
at 13:00. Junior Rhett Rakhshani fired a shot past Nolan from right
in front of the Tech net for his ninth goal of the season.
Senior Geoff Kinrade sent the game to overtime thanks to
his goal with less than one minute remaining in the game. The goal
was the 50th point of his career.
Cheverie (14-6-2) and Nolan (2-11-1) each made 30 saves in the
game.
The two teams will wrap-up the series tomorrow (Jan. 10) at 7:07
p.m.
