OMAHA, Neb. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team recorded a
school record 20.0 blocks en route to defeating No. 11 Emporia
State 3-1 today at the Comfort Inn & Suites/Firewater Grille
Tournament hosted by Neb. Omaha. The previous record of 19.5 blocks
was set against St. Cloud State on Aug. 25, 2006.
"Blocking has been a strength of ours," said head coach Krista
Mikesch. "Our blocking took Emporia out of their game and they
had to make some changes that led to our victory. I was also
pleased in the way that we finished each set off."
Senior Christa Jung paced the Tech blocking game
recording two block solos and nine block assists, and junior Kelly
Jorgenson finished with 11 block assists.
Senior Veronica Armstrong led the Huskies with a
match-high 16 kills, and senior Jen Jung
finished with 11 kills to pace a Tech attack that hit .248 for the
match. The Hornets finished with a .007 attack percentage.
"I thought our match against Emporia State was a great team effort
from all 16 players," said Mikesch.
The Huskies dropped their opening match of the day 3-2 to Minn.
State Moorhead despite leading nearly every statistical category in
the match.
"We beat ourselves. We came out slow and we were not ready to
play," said Mikesch.
Armstrong and Jen Jung once again led Tech's offensive attack
combining for 31 of the team's 60 kills.
Sophomore Kaitlin Wiza finished with a match-high 21 digs
to lead a quintet of Tech players with 10 or more digs.
Michigan Tech (3-1) will continue play next weekend (Sept. 5-6) at
the Lewis Flyer Invitational in Romeoville, Ill.
