GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Michigan Tech hockey team saw its season
come to an end Sunday (March 16) after it lost to No. 2 North
Dakota 2-1 in game three of the opening round of the WCHA
Playoffs.
"I am proud of the players. They put everything into the game
tonight but it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to," said head
coach Jamie Russell.
For the first time in the series, Michigan Tech scored the first
goal of the game. Junior Alex Gagne sent a pass to senior Tyler
Shelastwho tipped the puck home at 11:27 of the first period
for his third goal in the series.
Junior T.J. Oshie tied the game for the Fighting Sioux with his
16th goal of the season at 14:09. He collected a pass from junior
Ryan Duncan before skating across the Huskies' net and beating
junior Michael-Lee Teslak on the backhand. Sophomore
Chay Genoway recorded his 19th assist of the season on the
even-strength goal.
Oshie scored his second goal of the evening off a blast from just
outside the crease 19 seconds into the second period. Senior Robbie
Bina and junior Taylor Chorney each assisted on the goal. The goal
stood up as the game-winner.
The Huskies pulled Teslak with 36 seconds remaining in the third
period for the extra attacker. Tech applied pressure, but could not
score the equalizer before the final horn. UND skated away with the
2-1 win.
J.P. Lamoureux (24-9-4) made 10 saves and let in one goal in the
Sioux win.
Teslak (8-11-4) made 22 saves and gave up both UND goals.
Neither team could capitalize on the man advantage with Tech
finishing 0-3 and North Dakota 0-2.
Michigan Tech finishes the season 14-20-5 and North Dakota is
25-9-4 as it heads to the 2008 Red Baron WCHA Final Five next
weekend (March 20-22) in St. Paul, Minn.
