GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Michigan Tech hockey team rallied from a
two goal deficit to defeat No. 2 North Dakota 3-2 in overtime
Saturday (March 15). Senior Tyler
Shelast scored with six seconds remaining in the third period
to force overtime. Shelast then followed up with the game winner at
1:59 of overtime.
"That group deserved that win. We have not had a lot of bounces go
our way this season and these guys deserve it," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "They didn't give up tonight."
With the win, Michigan Tech snapped North Dakota's 18-game unbeaten
streak. The Sioux loss was it's first since Jan. 4, 2008 when it
lost to St. Cloud State 3-2.
The Fighting Sioux found the net first after junior Brad Miller
fired a shot from the top of the circle that hit junior Michael-Lee
Teslak before ending up in the net. Freshman Matt Frattin and
junior Ryan Martens assisted on Miller's fifth goal of the season
at 4:19 of the first period.
The Huskies committed a costly turnover that led to a three-on-two
advantage for the Fighting Sioux. Frattin fired a wrist shot from
the slot for his fourth goal of the season at 16:58 of the second
period. Miller picked up the lone assist on the goal.
The Huskies broke up the Sioux shutout thanks to a power play goal
by senior captain Jimmy Kerr at 1:19 of the third period. Junior Geoff
Kinrade passed the puck to Kerr at the top of the circle who
one-timed the puck for his ninth goal of the season. Freshman Eric
Kattelus tallied his eighth assist of the season on the goal.
He leads all freshman with 10 points.
With 1:56 remaining, North Dakota was put on the man advantage
after Michigan Tech was called for a cross check. Teslak was pulled
with 36 seconds remaining to negate the UND man advantage.
Sophomore Drew Dobson made a skate save on a shot on the
empty net. The Huskies threw the puck on net and senior Tyler
Shelast banged the rebound home with six seconds remaining to
tie the game at 2-2. Kerr and freshman Jordan
Baker picked up assists on the goal.
The short handed goal was the first by a Tech player since senior
Peter Rouleau scored short handed in a 5-2
victory over Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 15, 2008.
Michigan Tech controlled much of the action in over time. Sophomore
Chris VandeVelde was called for a hooking penalty at 1:27 and
Shelast made him pay scoring his second goal of the game 32 seconds
later. He was assisted by Kinrade and senior Peter
Rouleau.
Michigan Tech finished 2-5 on the power play and North Dakota was
0-6.
Junior Michael-Lee Teslak (8-10-4) made 23 saves and
gave up two goals in his second win over the Sioux this season.
Senior J.P. Lamoureux (23-9-4) made 23 saves and gave up all three
Tech goals.
The two teams will face off tomorrow (March 16) at 8:07 Eastern
time with the winner advancing to the 2008 Red Baron WCHA Final
Five at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
