GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota scored two power play goals in
a 4-0 victory over the Michigan Tech hockey team in the first game
of the WCHA Playoffs Friday (March 14).
"We play four lines and six defensemen deep. We need all guys on
the bus. No passengers," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We need to have every one show up and ready to
play."
North Dakota took advantage of its first power play of the game.
Junior Ryan Duncan beat junior Michael-Lee
Teslak high on the glove side with only two seconds remaining
on the man advantage for his 14th goal of the season. Junior T.J.
Oshie and sophomore Chay Genoway assisted on the goal at 5:25 of
the first period.
Oshie and Duncan also factored into the second goal for the
Fighting Sioux. Oshie scored his 15th goal of the season right in
front of the Michigan Tech net off an assist by Duncan. Sophomore
Chris VandeVelde picked up his 16th assist of the season on the
goal.
Teslak made the initial save on a shot by freshman Jake Marto but
the rebound bounced into the air over Teslak. Sophomore Darcy Zajac
hit the loose puck out of the air for his second goal of the
season. He was assisted on the goal at 9:10 of the second period by
freshman Jake Marto and Genoway.
UND added one more goal in the third period. Junior Brad Miller
used some fancy stick handling to get through the Michigan Tech
defense before passing to junior Andrew Kozek who scored five hole
on Teslak. Junior Ryan Martins also tallied an assist on the power
play goal at 6:58.
Senior Jean-Philippe Lamoureux (22-8-4) made 14 saves in his sixth
shutout of the season.
Teslak (7-10-4) made 27 saves for the Huskies.
The Fighting Sioux finished 2-6 on the power play and the Huskies
finished 0-6.
With the win, North Dakota improves to 24-8-4 and Michigan Tech
falls to 13-19-5.
The two teams will face off tomorrow (March 15) at 7:07 p.m. at
Ralph Engelstad Arena.
