HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech hockey team came away with
one point Friday night after it skated to a 1-1 tie with Wisconsin
in front of a crowd of 3,883 during Winter Carnival.
"I wanted to come away with two points tonight. We were up 1-0 in
the third period and we had the opportunity to drive the nail
through the coffin," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We had some great opportunities to win the game
tonight."
With the tie the Huskies are now 10-12-5, 6-9-4 WCHA and the
Badgers are 12-11-6, 8-9-4 WCHA.
A pair of Michigan Tech freshman connected to score the team's only
goal. Freshman Eric Kattelus worked hard to bring the puck into
the Wisconsin end before finding freshman Bennet Royer in front of
the net. Royer buried the puck at 9:06 of the second period for the
second goal of his career.
Senior captain Jimmy Kerr nearly extended the Tech lead to 2-0 a
mere 30 seconds after Royer's goal. Kerr skated just inside the
blueline and fired a shot that rang off the pipe.
The Badgers had two quality scoring opportunities in the first
period, including a shot off the pipe, but could not capitalize on
either.
Freshman Kyle Turris evened things up for Wisconsin at 9:55 of the
third period with a shot from the slot through a maze of traffic.
The goal was his 11th of the season. Sophomore Aaron Bendickson and
sophomore Jamie McBain each assisted on the goal.
Junior Michael-Lee Teslak (4-5-4) turned in another
strong performance for the Huskies. He made 22 saves on 23 shots
for the Huskies. The tie was his third in his last four starts.
"I thought Michael-Lee played outstanding in net tonight. He sent
the rebounds to the corners and gobbled everything else up," said
Russell.
Junior Shane Connelly (11-11-4) allowed one goal and made 19 saves
for the Badgers.
The game also included it's fair share of penalties as the Badgers
were whistled for 10 penalties for 20 minutes and the Huskies were
called for 11 penalties for 22 minutes. Neither team could
capitalize on the power play as Wisconsin finished 0-7 and Tech was
0-6.
The two teams will wrap-up the series tomorrow at 5:07 p.m.
