HOUGHTON, Mich. - Freshman Dustin Jackson's power play goal at
the end of the second period lifted No. 7 Denver to a 1-0 victory
over the Michigan Tech hockey team on Friday (Feb. 29). Denver
improves to 22-10-1, 16-8-1 and Michigan Tech falls to 11-17-5,
7-14-4.
"We played a solid game tonight. We had our chances," said head
coach Jamie Russell.
The Pioneers posted two quality scoring chances that rang off the
pipe with less than two minutes left in the first period.
The Huskies had a chance to score with 40 seconds remaining in the
first period as the puck took an awkward bounce off the board and
went in front of the Pioneer goal. Sophomore Ryan
Bunger dove at the puck but was unable to connect before the
net was knocked off.
The second period was riddled with penalties, as the two teams
combined for sixteen penalty minutes.
Junior Michael-Lee Teslak made the initial save on a
shot by freshman Kyle Ostrow, but the rebound remained in the
crease before it was tapped in by Jackson.
In the third period, sophomore John
Kivisto shot the puck off the pipe and the puck remained in the
crease before senior Peter Mannino covered the puck for Denver.
The Huskies pulled Teslak with one minute remaining but were unable
to score with the extra attacker.
Denver finished the game 1-6 on the power play and Tech was
0-4.
Mannino (21-10-1) made 21 saves on route to posting his fifth shut
out of the season.
Teslak (5-8-4) made 21 saves on 22 shots in the loss.
