HOUGHTON, Mich. - Michigan Tech sophomore Ryan
Bunger tied the game with 2:03 remaining but Minnesota Duluth
scored the game-winner at 19:00 to earn a Western Collegiate Hockey
Association split at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena
tonight.
Tech opened the scoring five minutes into the contest as senior Tyler
Shelast pounded home a rebound on the Huskies' first power play
of the evening. Freshman Eric Kattelus fired a shot that fell right
in front of Bulldog goaltender Alex Stalock. Senior Jimmy
Kerr also picked up an assist on Shelast's seventh power play
goal of the campaign.
UMD tied the game less than three minutes later as Kerr's clearing
attempt bounced off Tech netminder Michael-Lee
Teslak and found its way into the home goal. Sophomore Trent
Palm was credited with the goal for the visitors.
Tech's Jordan Baker was whistled for a five-minute
checking from behind penalty at 12:49 of the second frame. The
Bulldogs made it count less than two minutes into the man advantage
as an initial shot was deflected high over Teslak's right
shoulder.
The score remained 2-1 until Bunger rejuvenated the home crowd of
2,915 fans with a tip-in off a shot from junior Ryan
Angelow from the right point. Sophomore Eli
Vlaisavljevich also registered his second helper of the season
on the goal.
UMD's Evan Oberg scored the game-winner as his shot found its way
through traffic and bounced in off the inside left post. The
Huskies used an extra attacker for the final 52 seconds before the
final horn.
"Our guys did a terrific job tonight. We didn't get the bounces
tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell.
Michigan Tech finished 1-of-4 on the power play compared to a
1-of-5 mark by Minnesota Duluth. Teslak (5-6-4) made 22 saves in
the Huskies' net while Stalock (12-10-6) was credited with 15
stops.
Tech (11-14-5 overall and 7-11-4 in the WCHA) will head to St.
Cloud State next weekend for another WCHA series. Faceoffs are set
for 8:37 p.m. on Friday and 8:07 p.m. on Saturday.
