HOUGHTON, Mich. - Senior Peter
Rouleau had a hand in all five Michigan Tech goals to lead the
hockey Huskies to a 5-2 win over No. 12 Minnesota Duluth. The
Hancock, native scored a hat-trick and added two assists for a
career-high five points. His previous hat trick came in a 9-0
victory at Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 27th, 2006.
"Pete gave us 40 great minutes tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "Our guys came back after the first period and scored
three goals in the second period."
The Bulldogs (11-10-6, 7-9-5) scored the game's first goal wasting
no time on their first power play of the evening. Junior MacGregor
Sharp scored his sixth goal of the year off a wrist shot 22 seconds
into the power play. He was assisted by freshman Justin Fontaine
and senior Matt McKnight.
Rouleau tallied his first assist of the evening on a goal by junior
Alex Gagne at 6:35 of the second period. Senior
Tyler Shelast also notched his eighth assist of
the season on the goal for the Huskies (11-13-5, 7-10-4).
Rouleau then followed up with his first goal of the evening at
11:57. Sophomore Drew Dobson, who recorded his team leading 14th
assist on the goal, collected a Bulldog shot from the blue line and
found Rouleau skating down the middle who then faked out the
Bulldog goalie for the short handed goal.
Rouleau scored his second goal of the evening, this time on the
power play, at 19:05 of the second period. He was assisted by
freshman Eric Kattelus and senior Jimmy
Kerr.
Freshman Chad Huttel brought Duluth back within one goal after he
scored off a shot from the blue line that was redirected by a Tech
player for his first career goal. Senior Mike Curry and sophomore
Trent Palm each assisted on the even strength goal at 5:27 of the
third period.
Rouleau tallied his 13th assist of the season after he faked a shot
before finding Gagne who recorded his second goal of the evening
and fourth of the season at 11:30.
"It feels real good to score two goals. It has been a while since I
scored," said Gagne.
The Bulldogs pulled its goalie for the extra skater but it was
Rouleau who scored his third goal to complete the hat trick with an
empty net goal for the Huskies at 18:38. He was assisted by Shelast
and Gagne. The hat trick was the first by a Tech player since Justin
St. Louis recorded one, which also included a short handed
goal, in a 5-4 win at Minnesota on March 3, 2007. Rouleau's five
points was the most by a Tech player since junior Malcolm
Gwilliam recorded two goals and three assists in a 7-1 win
against Minnesota State on Oct. 20th, 2007.
"Once you touch the puck you start getting bounces. It was great
when the crowd started chanting my name," said Rouleau. "It was
great to get the win at home."
Junior Michael-Lee Teslak (5-5-4) made 20 saves and
allowed two goals for the Huskies.
Sophomore Alex Stalock (11-10-6) allowed four goals and made 22
saves in 58:28 minutes of work for the Bulldogs.
Tech held a 27-22 advantage in shots and each team finished 1-6 on
the power play.
The two teams will wrap-up its series tomorrow (Feb. 16) at 7:07
p.m. at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
